2010 National Championship Preview: #1 Alabama vs #2 Texas

ingram

The Alabama Crimson Tide offense, led by Heisman Trophy Winner running back Mark Ingram, will be facing a tough Texas defense and will need to have a great all-around game to complete their undefeated season. I believe the combo of Ingram and true freshman running back Trent Richardson will be able to run for 100 yards each on the Longhorn defense and will need that in order to open up the passing game for junior quarterback Greg McElroy. McElroy will need to spread the ball around to his All-American wide receiver Julio Jones, sophomore wide receiver Marquis Maze and senior tight end Colin Peek.

It wouldn’t hurt to get senior running back Roy Upchurch involved as well. Alabama should get some help from cornerback/return man Javier Arenas to help with field position.

On defense, Dick Butkus Award Winner junior linebacker Rolando McClain should spearhead this Crimson Tide attack on the Texas offense. Alabama also has two future NFL stars on defense that will help lead the charge, defensive tackle Terrence Cody and cornerback Javier Arenas. Cody should control the line of scrimmage and bring some pressure and make some tackles behind the line of scrimmage, while Arenas mans the secondary. The team speed of both the offense and defense should be the difference in this game.

The killer combination of Heisman Trophy Candidate Colt McCoy and senior wide receiver Jordan Shipley will have to be in full effect tonight for the Longhorns to pull this one out. Texas’ leading rusher Tre’ Newton will also need to have a big game for Texas to pull this one out. Shipley had 106 catches this year and will be Colt McCoy’s top target in the game and will get lots of attention from the Alabama defense. McCoy should have some help from junior wide receiver James Kirkendoll and sophomore wide receivers Dan Buckner and Malcolm Williams.

On defense, future NFL stars, senior defensive end Sergio Kindle and junior safety Earl Thomas will need to have huge games in order to stop the Crimson Tide offense. Thomas led the Big 12 and finished tied for 2nd in the nation with eight interceptions and will definetly play ball hawk tonight against the Alabama offense.

Overall, the Crimson Tide’s team speed will be too much for the Longhorns and will break the streak of the teams Heisman Trophy Winners not winning a National Championship.
