49ers QB Alex Smith Has His Worst Day Of The Summer

Updating a previous story from Matt Maiocco describing 49ers quarterback Alex Smith having only a “so-so” training camp, Phil Barber from the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reports that Smith had ” perhaps his worst day of the summer.” on Tuesday.

All in all, though, it was a morning the 49ers’ field leader would like to forget, starting with the first play of team period when he had to step up and run away from pressure. Later in that period, third-string CB Patrick Stoudamire broke up two Smith passes in three snaps; the second one was thrown directly at Stoudamire, forcing WR Josh Morgan to play defense.

A little later in 7-on-7, Smith sailed a ball so high over RB Frank Gore on a wheel route that it short-hopped a cameraman’s shin on the sideline; then he overthrew WR Ted Ginn in the end zone. When team period began anew, Smith threw behind Williams on a crossing route, tossed a pass over the middle to TE Delanie Walker that S Dashon Goldson nearly picked off, and missed Ginn on a ball that CB Nate Clements leaped to intercept.

The 49ers were working on a lot of red-zone situation today but offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said that was no excuse for Smith’s problems.  He did note that the team’s best receivers TE Vernon Davis and WR were not on the field as options for Smith.  Raye also believes Smith may be a little “arm weary.”  Raye had no concern in his voice, but Niners fans can’t be too thrilled to hear about Smith hitting the wall 10 days into camp.

Smith’s starting job remains secure as reports indicate backup David Carr has done nothing to challenge Smith.

Somewhere out there is a Montana or Young! SF just has to find him. When they drafted Smith in the frst round, I just couldn't believe they woul waste first pick on him. If he doesn't perform, he will be gone. Another Ryan Leaf bust!

Will someone in management please cut this bum, he is a disgrace to the SF uniform. He should never throw a ball over 5 yards, the rest of the time hand off to Gore and Dixon in the red zone. Smith sickens me, what a bust!

Give me a break. Let's at least see him in game action this year. If he doesn't do it then, fine. Go to plan B. Let's not make decisions based on practices.

Nate Davis needs to move himself up as a potential Montana or Young. I'm telling you he is the real deal and should bring the 49ers some glory. I just hope he sets himself up to compete. I know he is ready. He is a winner!
