49ers Second-Year RB Glen Coffee Decides To Retire

Glen Coffee was not present for practice on Thursday for the San Francisco 49ers and he didn’t show up at practice again this morning.

Now, there is a perfectly good explanation for his absence.

Coffee has decided to retire from the NFL, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

So much for that third-round draft pick. The 49ers selected Coffee in the third round from Alabama just a year ago. Coffee was expected to be the primary backup to starter Frank Gore(notes) this season. He was expected to have a role on special teams. Now, poof, he’s vanished.

Coffee appeared in 14 games as a rookie for the 49ers and carried the ball 83 times. Now, rookie Anthony Dixon(notes) could have an opportunity to become the No. 2 behind Gore. Otherwise, San Francisco might soon be in the market for a veteran backup just like the New Orleans Saints are.
