Brett Favre’s Return To The NFL: The Sports Bloggers Take

brettfavrevikings

I contacted a few of my favorite sports writers and asked them the question, “What do they think about the return of Brett Favre to the NFL?”

“My take on it is Brett Favre needs to retire and let someone else take the spotlight. Favre has no more records to break and will not win a Super Bowl with whichever team he plays for. So in my mind, he’s only doing this just to get back at the Green Bay Packers and General Manager Ted Thompson. This is a very selfish act by Favre and it will come back to bite him in the butt. Believe that!!!”

Ed from Ed The Sports Fan says: “To be honest, I want Brett Favre to play if he really wants to play. He’s still better than half the QBs in the league and just how I felt about Jordan, its his right to want to play as long as someone’s willing to pay him and he loves it. Just tell John Madden, ESPN, and even other blogs to let the story breathe and don’t overkill the story, makes my eyes and ears bleed.”

Tracy from Mindpinball says: “I think that Brett Favre should stay retired; in fact he should have retired before LAST season. I think that he’s only ruining his legacy at this point. I understand his itch to play, but at some point it ends for everyone, and he needs to face up to it.”

Joslin from PigskinLovingLady: “I wish Brett Favre would leave well enough alone. Prior to his stint with the NY Jets, Favre’s legacy was intact, a joy to remember. His love for the game was evident and his passion burned bright and the reason for his return is neither – he wants revenge. If I could advise the future HOFer, I’d tell him to “stay retired  so you can remain “golden.”

Chuck from Sportaphile says: “I don’t mind Brett Favre coming back because it gives the upcoming season another sub-plot that will be entertaining to watch. If Brett does good, he can stick it to the Packers, Ted Thompson, and Aaron Rodgers. If Brett tanks, then we get to watch him get ran out of the league with his tail between his legs. Either way it’s going to be funny.”

Reeta from The NFL Chick says: “In all of my years of watching football, Brett Favre is one of the greatest players I’ve ever seen. But after watching him play last season, I realized that he can’t play at the same level that he did 10 years ago. Coming out of retirement again would be a huge mistake. If I could tell Favre one thing, I’d tell him to stay retired and keep his legacy in tact. Any REAL Favre fan doesn’t want to see him end his season like last year. We only want to see him leave on top.”

Malik from Blitz Magazine says: “The Vikings are a making a huge mistake by trying to influence Favre to play for them next season. Favre doesn’t want to be a NFL Quarterback anymore, he only wants to be a Sunday Quarterback which means he doesn’t want to put in the time and commitment that is necessary for a starting QB. The NFL is a far cry from Flag Football. He only wants to play in the games and that’s not fair to his teammates, coaches and most importantly the fans. Just ask the people in NY.  Eric Mangini who just lost his job because of Favre should give Brad Childress the heads up about what he’s really getting into. Mind you, Brad Childress this season like Mangini last season is coaching for his job. Remember, the Vikings invested over $155 million in their offense and defense bringing in guys like Bernard Berrian (six years, $43.4 million) and Madieu Williams (six years, $33 million) and traded for Jared Allen (six years, $74.5 million). The Jets made similar moves spending around $140 million last season and they felt that Favre was the missing piece. It was the classic case of fools gold. Because Favre the once great gunslinger, doesn’t have the physical tools to sling the ball around anymore. Just take a look a his last five game and its obvious that Favre couldn’t make the plays. Furthermore, he didn’t communicate with his teammates, brushed off coaches and costs his team games. The Vikings like the Jets last season are a run dominated team that believes in ball control and good defense. They need a quarterback that can manage the game and protect the ball. Even during Favre’s MVP seasons he was never that type of player. So what makes Childress and Vikings think he’s that player now?”

A special thanks to all that participated!!!

Aw snap! I did not know that you neede my response right then. I think Favre should talk to Jerry Jones. I love Brett and will not say anything bad about him. He may still have a good year or two left. And since I no longer have faith in Romo…

Malik is 100% right. I think Favre wants to play, but he wants to do it on his terms, and it can't work that way if the Vikings are seriously trying to make this run. Thing is…if Childress does talk to him, and Favre really wants to play, he'll let him, and he'll even go along with the special treatment.

I can't believe Ed said that. He hates Favre…hahahahahaha

I'll get you on the next one.

I agree with Kenny and Malik. If the comments from Kerry Rhodes and Thomas Jones are to be believed, then Brett Favre only wants the Sunday glory, not the work you have to put in to make that glory happen. That's not the way a future Hall of Famer should go out.

[...] The Brett Favre soap opera: Lord knows I’m tired of this one! Once again, another NFL offseason, another round of speculation as to whether or not Brett Favre will come back to play for someone. Again, the Minnesota Vikings have been mentioned as his most likely suitor. And once again I say. Don’t do it! If comments from some of the New York Jets from last season are to be believed, Favre doesn’t appear to want to put the work in during the week to get ready for the games; he just wants to play the games. I suppose when you’ve been around as long as Favre has, you can figure where corners can be cut. But in the NFL, cutting corners isn’t necessarily a strong strategy. These are year-round athletes, even if the season only lasts a few months. In my opinion, he needs to be just as committed to the work that leads to the games, as he is to the games themselves. In just the last week he has gone from definitely retired to meeting with the Vikings to discuss coming back, to being committed to retiring (again), to listing conditions which will allow him to play again. The story has been getting non-stop play on ESPN, being mentioned on SportsCenter every quarter hour or less just to make sure the audience is paying attention. Basically, he needs to decide if he wants to go through another season and remain committed to doing so, or just give up the game he loves. I understand he has an itch to play, but maybe it’s time to look in another direction. I also left my opinion on this issue at a blog post at MKRob’s Sports Blog. [...]
