Deadline Approaching For Panthers To Sign DE Peppers

to a long-term contract is fast approaching.
If the Panthers can’t strike a deal with the four-time Pro Bowl defensive end before the league’s Wednesday deadline then they’ll pay him $16.683 million this season.
However, if the Panthers are somehow able to sign Peppers to a long-term contract — and thus reduce his base salary for 2009 — it would free up money to use under the NFL salary cap to sign other free agents. If no long-term deal is reached the Panthers likely will head into this season with their current roster pretty much intact.
The Panthers still haven’t signed any veteran free agents because they’re so strapped under the NFL salary cap, largely because they’ve so much money committed to Peppers.
If the Panthers can’t sign Peppers to a long-term contract before Wednesday they’d need to wait until after the season to try again. Even then, the Panthers could elect to put the franchise tag on Peppers again at a cost of more than $20 million for the 2010 season.
