Dear Jerry Jones, Bring Back Jimmy Johnson!!!

jimmyjohnson

I was sitting in front of my laptop wondering why the Dallas Cowboys picked the way they pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Then I wondered how Jimmy Johnson would pick if he was still with us.

Johnson left Dallas in 1993 and the Cowboys haven’t sniffed a Super Bowl since Barry Switzer took his team over in 1994 and won the Super Bowl in 1995 with the same players, Jimmy won with.

Johnson was a master drafter in Dallas and was known as a super motivator as well. The Cowboys seem to be the opposite with a soft head coach and an even worse GM.

Jimmy drafted an entire Super Bowl team building around his former star wide receiver at the University of Miami, Michael Irvin, including Troy Aikman in 1989 and Emmitt Smith in 1990.

He was able to get these players off an unprecedented move by trading Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings which yielded six high draft picks and a number of players from the Vikings.

He also drafted future Hall of  Famers and great NFL players, Jay Novacek, Darren Woodson, Larry Allen, Jimmy Smith and with the Dolphins, Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor, Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain.

If you think about it, between the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins, neither of them have DRAFTED a Hall of Famer or possible Hall of Famer since Jimmy left their respective teams.

Everyone knows Jimmy Johnson came from the University of Miami and drafted alot of players from his former school and was very successful with those Hurricanes. He also coached a number of Hurricanes that were in the league that became great players in the NFL as well.

He drafted former Hurricanes, defensive tackle Russell Maryland, linebacker Darrin Smith, wide receiver Kevin Williams, quarterback Steve Walsh etc.

He was also great at finding hidden gems from small schools in the lower rounds of the draft like defensive end Tony Tolbert, tackle Erik Williams, safety Brock Marion and Super Bowl MVP Larry Brown

So I took the liberty of looking at players that have come out recently from my Miami Hurricanes and who my Dallas Cowboys had a realistic chance at drafting from UM and came up with this list of players that could possibly be Cowboys.

Jimmy left in 1993 so I’m not going to go back that far, but I will start with the year 2000, this also with the understanding the Cowboys didn’t have 1st round picks in 2000, 2001 and 2004:

In 2000, we took Dwayne Goodrich, a cornerback from Tennessee and we could have gotten linebacker NATE WEBSTER, now with the Denver Broncos in the 3rd round, which could solve our middle linebacker problem.

In 2002, we took safety Roy Williams with the #8 pick when we clearly needed a safety and chose Williams over safety ED REED who went #24 to the Ravens and in the 2nd round we chose center Andre Gurode #37 overall when we could have gotten running back CLINTON PORTIS who went #51 overall to the Broncos.

In 2003, we took cornerback Terence Newman #5 overall when Mr. Wheel and Deal Jimmy Johnson would have traded up to get a faster Michael Irvin in ANDRE JOHNSON who went #3 overall to the Texans.

In 2006, we took linebacker Bobby Carpenter with the #18 when could have gotten a solid cornerback in KELLY JENNINGS who went #31 to the Seahawks, in the 2nd round we took tight end Anthony Fasano #53 overall when kick/punt returner DEVIN HESTER who went #57 to the Bears was sitting there right in front of our face.

Imagine if the Cowboys went the Jimmy Johnson route in drafting Hurricanes…..

I think we would be ALOT better off!!!

BRING BACK JIMMY JOHNSON!!!

Maybe someone can coax him to take the GM's job….or is the owner the true GM? In any case, Johnson has a well-deserved reputation as a top-notch talent evaluator. The examples you cited above prove the point. Dallas won those Super Bowls under his watch (and Switzer's) with superior talent that he molded into a championship caliber team.

Jimmy and Jerry couldn't work together so they split. But Jerry needs him he just won't admit it.
