Dillard HS DB Wayne Lyons Questions College Recruiters

Dillard High School senior defensive back Wayne Lyons has flipped the tables on college football recruiters.

The No. 10 ranked prospect in the Sporting News Top 100 is the one asking the questions and doing the evaluating to figure out where he wants to go to college.

Lyons and his mother, Gwen Bush, developed a 50-question survey and sent it to every interested school. The questions cover the basics often asked by incoming freshman, such as what type of living accommodations do players have and what are the admission requirements.

But some of the questions are geared for mom such as “If my mom had to fly to see me play, what is the best airport to fly into from Fort Lauderdale?”

“Any way you can learn more about the school is important,” said Lyons, who already has 49 scholarship offers and displays letters from all the top programs on the walls in his home. “I think it is a great idea and now I have a file to check their answers when I can’t remember what they’re response was. I actually could have asked more, but my mom and I decided we had to cut it off somewhere and so we settled on 50 questions.”

They ask the survey be completed by June 19. Lyons said he hopes to have his top 15 college programs selected by the end of June.

“As we’ve spoken to the recruiters, they always ask me if we have any questions for them, and I said that yes, we have a lot of them,” Bush said. “By doing this we can be more specific and concentrate on the intricacies of each school.”

“I’ve never heard of anything like this before,” said Pete Sampson, of Rivals.com. “I think more players will begin to adopt this, especially the high-level recruits who can get away with it more. It cuts through the fluff immediately and lets them gauge if a college is really interested in you.”

Northwestern was among the first to respond to Lyons survey. He said he was impressed with the thoroughness of the answers. Others who have responded so far are Notre Dame, UCLA, Stanford, Nebraska, Ohio State, Florida, Harvard, Vanderbilt and Alabama.

“He is a unique case because he is open to every school,” Sampson said. “If you are that open to where you go, there is really no way to talk that much to them all and then remember what they all said.”

At 6-foot, 185 pounds, Lyons is every bit the type of player that any college program would want. He has recorded 182 tackles, including 36 for a loss, over the past two seasons and also will see an expanded role on offense this season.

Lyons also is the 85th-ranked prospect in the nation by Rivals.com and No. 16 in the MaxPreps Top 100. With a 4.9 GPA, Lyons is in line to be the valedictorian of his class and participates in multiple extracurricular activities such as serving as president of the sophomore, junior and now senior class; a National Honor Society member and belongs to several leadership groups such as the Congressional Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C.

Lyons, who wants to major in engineering, is pleased if others use the questionnaire like him to find the right place to continue playing and pursue an education.

“This has been a great process,” Lyons said. “I just hope this helps open up more opportunities for me to make my mark in history.”

A 4.9 GPA! I love this kid already…that's what I love to see. Top prospect athletically and academically. Loves the survey, I wonder how many schools will fill it out and return it by the deadline.
