Do High School Football Recruiting Rankings Really Mean Anything???

In my opinion, the high school recruiting rankings are ok, but not good enough for me to go on if I was recruiting for a college. I did some research on how many great players from the years 2002 and 2003 were actually ranked in the top 10 and if they weren’t in the top 10, how far down they were in these rankings. From what I’ve seen Scout.com has the best website for this kind of research and this is what I have found and when you see this, you will be completely shocked. When you see this information, you will no longer be mad that your favorite college team didn’t get the #1 quarterback or the #2 running back in the country. I saw many cases of players being ranked lower than their talent, but I took it upon myself to pick the most shocking ones on the list, here we go:

2002

Scout.com ranked former Miami Hurricane Ryan Moore #1, former Florida Gator commit Dishon Platt #2 and former Notre Dame receiver Rhema McKnight #3. Guess who was #13 in those rankings……

….that’s right Santonio Holmes the first round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers….guess who was #15 on this list…..

…you got it Larry Fitzgerald, a top 10 receiver in the NFL but #15 in high school. WOW!!!

Scout.com ranked former Stanford defensive end Julian Jenkins #1, former Ohio State defensive end Mike Kudla #2 and former Texas defensive end Larry Dibbles #3… Guess who was ranked #86 on this list…..

… yep Shawne Merriman, a first round pick and the leader of the San Diego Chargers defense, INCREDIBLE!!!

2003

Scout.com ranked former USC quarterback John David Booty #1, former Miami Hurricane quarterback Kyle Wright #2 and former Florida Gator Chris Leak #3…….take wild guess who was #43 on this list……

…..HMMMM!!! Baltimore Ravens first round pick and starting quarterback Joe Flacco and I’ll give you one even better, guess who was #44 on this list………You won’t believe it………….Are you ready?…………..

…….#3 overall pick in this past years draft Matt Ryan, arguably the NFL Rookie of the Year and has made Atlanta Falcons fans forget about #7.

So college football fans, please don’t be upset that the top players in high school don’t come to your school because sometimes #1 isn’t what’s best for your team, sometimes #41 one is.

Great article, but sometimes those top recruits can help your whole recruiting class, because they encourage other top players to come play for your school. Even though a lot of those top players never measure up to their expectations and have lackluster careers.

Nice post, this is good “investigative” blogging, I swear Notre Dame has had Top 5 recruiting classes in the last 4-5 years and they can’t beat Boston College.

Keep doing your thing fam, you still wanna do the live blog chat?
