Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland Apologizes To Dez Bryant For Asking Him If His Mother Was A Prostitute

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland apologized to Dallas Cowboys first-round draft pick Dez Bryant on Tuesday for asking whether his mother was a prostitute during a pre-draft visit.

David Wells, Bryant’s advisor, told ESPNDallas.com on Tuesday that the former Oklahoma State wide receiver was asked about his mother during a visit to the Dolphins before the NFL Draft in March.

Wells and Bryant declined further comment.

“My job is to find out as much information as possible about a player that I’m considering drafting. Sometimes that leads to asking in-depth questions,” Ireland said Tuesday in a statement released by the Dolphins. “Having said that, I talked to Dez Bryant and told him I used poor judgment in one of the questions I asked him. I certainly meant no disrespect and apologized to him.”

Ireland received permission from the Cowboys front office to speak with Bryant on Tuesday.

Last Wednesday, Bryant told Yahoo! Sports that during one of his pre-draft visits, a high-level executive of one NFL franchise had asked him whether his mother, Angela, was a prostitute.

“No, my mom is not a prostitute,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports. “I got mad — really mad — but I didn’t show it.”

The background of Bryant and his mother — including her lifestyle and past legal troubles — were widely reported prior to the draft.

What do you think of Jeff Ireland’s question to Dez Bryant?

Why the heck did it have to be my team that pulled this horse crap. I don't know why my organization loves hiring these pricks, from Nick Saban, Cam Cameron, to Bill Parcells/Ireland. I'm actually starting to miss having Dave Wandstedt run the show down here. He couldn't draft or make good trades, but he still found a way to win without shaming the organization in any way during his time. He knew how to treat athletes like people and not like greyhounds at the racetrack, unlike the pricks that followed him. I've always believed that NFL execs get away with way too much during these player interviews, every season you hear about these ridiculous "verbal abusive" interviews that are being administered by these ball clubs. Allowing player agents in the room during these interviews ought to help put an end to these clowns abusing their authority. To make matters worse, while giving his phony sorry statement, this jerk actually tried to defend his low life actions by saying "my job is to find out as much information as possible about a player that I’m considering drafting, sometimes that leads to asking in-depth questions". Firstly he is only sorry that it got out, when exactly did it dawn on him that what he said was wrong? He intently tried to push one of Bryant's buttons, because that's what these execs admittingly try do to these young men. As if a prospect showing some displeasure about some stranger disrespecting a member of their family is a bad thing. Maybe Fidel Godell ought to step in and police the NFL execs the way he does the athletes. Cause Old white man degrading young black men on a yearly basis, can't be good to the league's image. Nah…on second thought the NFL has nothing to worry about on the image front, most of these young men are to afraid of burning bridges to come out and tell it like Dez Bryant has. Thank you Dez for throwing caution to the wind and letting the world know of this injustice that goes on every year during these interviews.
