INTERVIEW with Falcons DE Chauncey Davis

This is an exclusive interview with Atlanta Falcons Defensive End Chauncey Davis. I have met many NFL players in my life and I haven’t met many as nice as Chauncey. He’s a very classy guy and is the definition of what an NFL player should be. Here’s the interview:

MKRob: When did you begin playing football?

Chauncey: In 1992.

MKRob: What team did you like growing up?

Chauncey: The Dallas Cowboys, my mom was a Cowboys fan, so I became a Cowboys fan.

MKRob: I know you grew up in Polk County, which produced players like Ray Lewis and Tracy McGrady, do you hang out with any of those guy?

Chauncey: I didn’t know any of those guys, I just heard of them coming from Polk County and being great athletes and becoming famous.

MKRob: What other sports did you play growing up?

Chauncey: Basketball, Track and Weight Lifting

MKRob: Who do you model your game after?

Chauncey: I don’t model my game after anyone, I just watch a little bit of everybody and take something from each one and play.

MKRob: I have to ask this question being a Miami fan, Why didn’t you go to Miami?

Chauncey: Miami had interest in me and when I was being recruited by them, Butch Davis was the head coach there and soon after he left and I went to Florida State. I felt I wouldn’t have been as focused if I went to Miami anyway. Florida State has had a great players and have a great tradition that I wanted to be apart of.

MKRob: Who was your favorite coach to play for and why?

Chauncey: I loved all my coaches, they all played a big part in my life as a player.

MKRob: What was the first thing you bought when you got into the league?

Chauncey: My town home and my car.

MKRob: Did you play Madden growing up and Do you play Madden now?

Chauncey: I play a little bit of Madden, not much.

MKRob: What do you miss the most about playing college football?

Chauncey: Running out of the tunnel and hearing the War Chant.

MKRob: How was it playing for the legendary Bobby Bowden?

Chauncey: Coach Bowden was a great coach and a great person. He was more about academics and life than he was about the sport of football.

MKRob: What do you think of the Michael Vick situation?

Chauncey: I think its a terrible situation. I would never wish that on anyone. Mike is a great person and its sad to see that he’s going through this. They don’t know the guy that I know. They only see Michael Vick from the outside. I don’t see why they can’t forgive him, he’s a human being , he makes mistakes just like everyone else. But I think he will be ok when he gets out.

MKRob: From the old quarterback to the new one. What do you think of rookie quarterback Matt Ryan?

Chauncey: He’s a great person, I see him being a leader and he works hard. He has alot to learn but I think he will be a good quarterback in the league.

MKRob: What do you think of the new commissioner and how he is handling all the issues in the NFL?

Chauncey: He leaves no breathing room at all, if you are even suspected of doing something wrong you will get suspended and lose money off rip. I believe actions shouldn’t be taken until the situation plays out. He is being tougher and tougher on us because of the past issues that have come up in the NFL. He is making these guys learn the hard way.

MKRob: What’s the best way to stay in the league?

Chauncey: Keep working hard. Just come to work everyday and if it’s your time to go, then it’s your time to go.

MKRob: What is your most memorable football moment?

Chauncey: It was a game in high school against the #1 team in 5A Kissimmee Osceola and we were in 4A, no one expected us to win, they had a running back named Willie Green who was one of the best running backs in Florida and I made a big play forcing a fumble on the goal line and the offense went down the field and scored. On another drive I forced another fumble and the offense scored again and we ended up beating them and that is my most memorable football moment.

MKRob: I know you have your first preseason game against the Jaguars in Jacksonville, how much family do you have taking that two hour drive up from Polk County?

Chauncey: I don’t really have anyone come up for the preseason games, I tell them to wait for the regular season.

MKRob: What kind of diet are you on and what do you do to keep up with the best players in the league?

Chauncey: I eat salads, fish and baked chicken. I stay away from fried foods.

MKRob: I know when I played football we played Tupac and Biggie before the games. What kind of music do you listen to before the game?

Chauncey: Sometimes I start off with Rap and then ease into the R&B. Some days if I feel I’m too hype before a game, I listen to R&B to calm myself down. It really depends on what mood I’m in. Rick Ross, T-Pain or whatever is hot.

MKRob: When I was growing up my #1 goal was to make the NFL not knowing that the odds were extremely slim. What would you tell these young kids that have dreams of playing in the league?

Chauncey: If you have a dream, go for it, but just in case you don’t make it, have a backup plan, get your degree.

MKRob: What are your plans after football?

Chauncey: Work with kids, I love working with kids, I want to start a group home where I can help kids get adopted . I want to get into a few other businesses too.

MKRob: Thanks alot Chauncey and have a great season!!!

Chauncey: No problem.

Chauncey has an upcoming website for his foundation and when I get the word from him that its up, I will add a link to it from my site.
