Fennville HS Basketball Star Wes Leonard Collapses And Dies After Making Game-Winning Shot

According to the Holland Sentinel, Fennville High School dual-athlete Wes Leonard collapsed and died Thursday night after sinking the game basket in a 57-55 overtime win over Bridgman High School to give the Blackhawks a perfect 20-0 season.

As fans ran onto the court, Leonard, who was only 16 years old, collapsed and was given CPR before the ambulance took him to Holland Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the hospital’s spokesman Tim Breed.

“All efforts were made after he arrived to help restart his heart, but unfortunately those efforts were not successful,” Breed said. “There likely will be an autopsy conducted to determine the actual cause of death.

“Clearly, we offer our condolences to Wes’ family and friends.” ~ Holland Sentinel

Leonard, who recently passed the 1,000 point mark in his high school career, he was the Blackhawks quarterback who led them to the second round of the playoffs this past fall and earned honorable mention all-state honors.

Fennville is scheduled to tip off the state tournament without their star player on Monday in district game at Lawrence High School.
