Former Baseball Player Brent Brewer To Play Football For The Vols
, has decided to play football for UT beginning this fall.
Brewer has spent more than four years playing baseball in the Milwaukee Brewers farm system.
He originally signed to play football for Florida State out of Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, Ga., in 2006. He chose to play baseball after Milwaukee selected him in the second round of the 2006 Major League Baseball draft.
Brewer told InsideTennessee.com he will be on scholarship at UT and plans to enroll in classes in July during the second session of summer school.
Brewer was considered a three-star wide receiver by Scout.com and Rivals.com in 2006.
Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker said Brewer will most likely play safety at UT. Walker said he believes Brewer could play defense or offense for the Vols.
“He’s a great athlete and he has a very good work ethic,” Walker said. “It’s going to be a pretty easy transition for him I would say.”
Walker said he and Brewer have already started working on the transition.
Walker said Brewer was at the high school recently training for his return to football.
“With him having to approach baseball as a job, I think he’ll take that same approach in the locker room at Tennessee,” Walker said. “Not only will it help him but it will help some of those young guys there at Tennessee, too.”
Brewer batted .240 with 17 home runs and 472 strikeouts in 427 games as a shortstop/outfielder in Milwaukee’s organization. He last played for Class AA Huntsville before deciding to leave baseball last month.
Brewer is the second player in the last week to join UT’s 2010 class.
