Hockey As It’s Meant to Be

Written by Arthur Lawrence

Perhaps no sport has benefited more from the high definition revolution than hockey. Although hockey has always had high attendance numbers and is generally regarded as one of the premier sports to witness live, it has garnered low viewer ratings over the years impart because audiences have complained about difficulty in following the action on TV. The NHL attempted to alleviate this problem by highlighting the puck on its broadcasts, but it was not until the advent of high definition that viewers watching hockey at home were treated to the sights of the game that live audiences see.

I have found it absolutely riveting to watch Los Angeles Kings hockey in high definition on satellite TV because it makes it feel like I am in the arena. Whether it is a pinpoint pass from Jack Johnson, a bone crushing hit by Dustin Brown, or Justin Williams firing a slapshot on goal, high definition TV has made the action twice as exciting. Whereas it used to be difficult to see the puck and follow who was in control of it, now it is even easier to keep track of it on TV than it is in the arena. With the advent and increasing popularity of directtv hd dvr, I believe hockey will begin to be as popular on TV as it is in person.
