Interview with Atlanta Dream Center Chantelle Anderson

chantelle

Before you read the interview  I would like to say two things about it, #1 I never thought that I would be able to get an interview with one of my Top 20 Sexiest Athletes and #2 Chantelle is the most pleasant, cool and classy woman you would ever want to meet.

Facts about Chantelle:

Height: 6’6″
College: Vanderbilt
Accolades:
1999 USA Today’s Player of the Year in Washington
All-SEC Second Team in 2000
All-SEC First Team in 2001
2001 Vanderbilt Female Player of the Year

Vanderbilt Inaugural Hall of Fame Inductee

Now for the interview:

MKRob: When did you start playing basketball?

Chantelle: I started playing basketball in the 6th grade, for the YMCA. I was too embarrassed to play ball for my school because I had big glasses and was super uncoordinated. I loved soccer at the time and hated basketball, but my Dad made me continue to play basketball.

MKRob: What other sports do you like to watch?

Chantelle: Football, I love watching games but I don’t know the players or all the positions.

MKRob: Are you single?

Chantelle: Single but occupied. ;-)

MKRob: What is your favorite kind of music?

Chantelle: R&B. I love Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Yolanda Adams and Beyonce sometimes.

MKRob: Who is your inspiration?

Chantelle: My Dad for making me play.  And Lisa Leslie, because she is the best ever at my position, but is also feminine and embraces her girly side. When I first played against her I was like “oh my gosh it’s Lisa Leslie”, but that wore off real quick. Haha.

MKRob: Who were you favorite players and teams growing up?

Chantelle: I’m from Southern California and so I grew up watching the Lakers and Magic Johnson. And of course everyone loved Jordan.

MKRob: What’s the difference between playing in college and playing in the pros?

Chantelle: The WNBA is just a higher level. The game is faster and more physical. And everyone on the roster, #s 1 through 12, is a baller.

MKRob: What do you think of Oklahoma center Courtney Paris’ promise to return her tuition in full if they don’t win the championship this year?

Chantelle: She can start paying that now because UConn is going to win it. Haha. But honestly, I don’t agree with what she said, but I do like the motivation behind it. I like that she’s willing to take accountability for her actions, because not enough athletes, or people in general, do that.

MKRob: What are three songs in your ipod that are from different genres of music?

Chantelle: Yolanda Adams- Victory from The Gospel Soundtrack, Beyonce- Diva from I am…Sacha Fierce, and Brit and Alex- Let It Go from the Step Up 2 Soundtrack.

MKRob: When did you realize you could play in the WNBA?

Chantelle: It was a dream of mine to play in the WNBA since it started in 1997. But I really realized it was probably gonna happen during my sophomore year in college.

MKRob: What’s the biggest misconception about female athletes?

Chantelle: I don’t like the assumption that all or most female athletes are gay, because all of us aren’t. And even if we were, that doesn’t change how good we are on the court, all the positive work we do in the community, and how important the WNBA is for young women growing up. I wish people would stop worrying about what we do in the bedroom and pay attention to what we do on the court.

MKRob: Do you feel you are a role model to younger girls?

Chantelle: Yes, because whether we like it or not, as athletes we are role models. Because of that we have to walk a line between living for ourselves and for those looking up to us.

MKRob: What are your plans after basketball?

Chantelle: Motivational speaking, broadcasting, writing a book, and I would love to own my own business

MKRob: Why don’t you dunk in games?

Chantelle: I’ve only dunked once. In college I worked on it for 20 minutes one day. Once I did it I was like, “ok cool,” and never worked on it again. I feel like if I’m going to be in the gym I’m going to work on something that will help my team every game.

MKRob: What are your goals for this season?

Chantelle: To stay healthy, do whatever I have to do to help my team win games, and represent God in a positive way both on and off the court.

MKRob: What advice do you have for girls wanting to play in the WNBA?

Chantelle: Set goals, work hard, and when you feel like giving up, don’t.

MKRob: What’s the first word that comes to mind when I say:

Greatness- consistency
Sexy- confidence
Fast- starving
Graceful- running
Crazy- the season

Chantelle’s Favorites:

Book – The Bible
Movie – Pretty Woman
Food – Anything on the breakfast menu
Restaurant – The Melting Pot
Color – Purple
