Yes, the Jets tried their best Wednesday to soften the blow for the fifth-year safety, but here is the cold truth: Rhodes’ benching, first reported by the Daily News, could be the precursor to his ouster.
Rhodes signed a five-year, $33.5 million contract extension before the 2008 season, but the blockbuster contract doesn’t tie him to the Jets. Barring injury, none of the remaining money is guaranteed, meaning the Jets can trade or cut Rhodes after the season without a stiff financial penalty – especially with 2010 looming as an uncapped year.
