Like many NFL stars who were raised in Tallahassee, Ernie Sims likes to give back to the community.

So much so, the North Florida Christian and Florida State alum — and Detroit Lions linebacker — is hosting not one, not two, but seven events this weekend.

“It means a lot to me that I’m able to do that and give back to the city that’s been good to me,” Sims said.

The Ernie Sims Celebrity Weekend kicks off Friday morning with a youth football and cheer camp at Springsax. Before the camp starts, there will be a presentation at 10:30 a.m. called “Beyond the Athlete” that will stress education.

“I just want to give back to Tallahassee, and I just want to let the kids have a good time this weekend and just learn and be around a lot of celebrities,” Sims said.

Kids and football fans will be in for a treat at Messer Park on Friday night for a celebrity football game. A handful of Sims’ Lions teammates are expected to participate, including Daunte Culpepper, Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith.

Saturday will also be a busy day at Florida State’s Mike Long Track, which will be the site of Sims’ first track invitational. Sims’ mother, Alice Sims — a former FSU All-American sprinter — will compete in the coach’s relay.

The festivities will switch gears Saturday night for an all-black attire party at The Moon, and the fun will continue Sunday with a car show and silent auction.

The weekend will conclude with Monday’s fifth-annual charity golf benefit at Summerbrooke. Sims said he has stepped up his golf game over the years.

“I’m going to let everyone know right now I’ve gotten very good,” Sims said. “Whoever plays against me better watch out.”
