Miami Hurricanes Learn Bowl Bid Sunday Night

University of Miami football fans will learn Sunday whether all they’ll need to get to the Hurricanes’ bowl game will be a tank of gasoline.

The answer will officially come on the day the Bowl Championship Series unveils its lineups.

The BCS games will be announced live on television at 8 p.m., but the 17th-ranked Hurricanes (9-3) could learn their fate sooner.

If the Chick-Fil-A Bowl in Atlanta chooses Virginia Tech as anticipated, then the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl in Jacksonville will take Florida State and the retiring Bobby Bowden.

The Champs Sports Bowl, which selects its Atlantic Coast Conference team after the Gator, is where the Hurricanes and their fans are hoping to land.

That game is at 8 p.m. Dec. 29 at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, where UM likely would face Northwestern (8-4), or possibly Wisconsin (8-3, with a late Saturday game against Hawaii).

But should the Champs select the loser of the ACC championship game between Georgia Tech and Clemson, Miami would fall to either the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl on Dec. 27 in Nashville, or the Meineke Car Care Bowl on Dec. 26 in Charlotte, N.C.

The Canes would face a Southeastern Conference team in the Music City Bowl (possibly Kentucky) or a Big East team in the Meineke. The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J. reported Saturday that the Meineke will choose between Rutgers (8-4) and Pittsburgh (9-3) and predicted that North Carolina likely will be the ACC team in that bowl.
