Miami Northwestern quarterback Teddy Bridgewater made a verbal commitment to Miami this week, making him another Bull to be added onto the Hurricanes roster.

Rated as a top 10 quarterback by ESPN, Rivals and Scout.com, Bridgewater is one of the more intriguing dual-threat quarterbacks in the 2011 class. He is tall (6’2), ultra athletic and makes a ton of plays with both his arm and legs.

Playing for a team like Northwestern, even as a sophomore, is a good confidence builder. Bridgewater can also stand safely in the pocket for extended periods of time and read defenses without fear of being hit in most games. He has great arm strength, very good accuracy, and outstanding mobility. He’s very good at throwing on the run in either direction, uncannily so rolling left.

Although Bridgewater says his commitment is solid, this is only a “verbal” commitment, so don’t get too excited Hurricanes fans, he hasn’t signed yet.

For those who aren’t familiar with the recruiting process, high school athletes can verbally commit to a school at any point and time, but it doesn’t become official until they sign their commitment letter on signing day which is in February.

This is a huge commitment for Miami because the ‘Canes are extremely thin at quarterback.  Starting quarterback junior Jacory Harris, also a Northwestern alum,  will be the starter with an inexperienced group behind him in sophomore A.J. Highsmith and true freshman Stephen Morris. Highsmith nor Morris were ever this highly rated and in my opinion, aren’t as good as Bridgewater right now.

Overall, this will bring some heavy competition for the starting job in 2011, if the Harris decided to move on to the NFL a season early. If he doesn’t, Highsmith and Morris will be fighting for the backup job with Bridgewater on campus and that fight will not be an easy one.
