MKRob’s Elite 8 Heisman Candidates

tebow

Tim Tebow, QB, Florida- Senior

643 passing yards, 6 TD’s, 170.9 passer rating,
271 rushing yards, 5 TD’s

Tebow automatically gets in this race for two reasons, he’s the best player on the #1 team in the nation and he’s won the Heisman Trophy before.

Tebow suffered a concussion against Kentucky two weeks ago and will be a game time decision for coach Urban Meyer when the Gators face #4 LSU on Saturday night.

He will have an opportunity to grab more Heisman votes if he can pull out a big win against the Tigers in Baton Rouge.

mccoy

Colt McCoy, QB, Texas- Senior

1,145 passing yards, 9 TD’s, 151.0 passer rating

McCoy is the leader of the #2 team in the nation and finished as a Heisman finalist last year and is up for it again this year with which I believe a better chance to win because they seem reluctant to give Tebow the Heisman again along with last year’s winner, Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford out of the race due to an injury suffered in their opening game loss to BYU, McCoy has a real shot at winning it this year as long as he keeps the Longhorns undefeated and in the National Championship.

pike

Tony Pike, QB, Cincinnati- Senior

1,493 passing yards, 13 TD’s and 159.9 passer rating

Pike is the quarterback for probably the most underrated of the top 10 teams. He’s in the top 10 of all the passing categories and leads an undefeated team that has shocked the college football world this year. These things make him a legitimate Heisman Candidate.

More than likely the Bearcats will be a BCS buster down the road and will make a pretty good run at a National Championship. Pike has also made himself into a pretty decent NFL prospect as well. Look for Pike to possibly be a 2nd round pick in this year’s draft.

harris

Jacory Harris, QB, Miami- Sophomore

1,008 passing yards, 8 TD’s, 151.9 passer rating

Harris has led his Miami Hurricanes to a 3-1 start throughout arguably the roughest opening schedule in college football.

The Hurricanes are ranked #11 right now and its due to the cool, calm attitude and the accurate passing of Harris.

Harris is just sophomore but claimed a spot in the Heisman race after defeating three top 20 teams including a 21-20 win over the then #9 ranked Oklahoma Sooners. He may not win it this year but he will definetly be in the race next year.

clausen

Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame- Junior

1,554 yards, 12 TD’s, 179.3 passer rating

Clausen leads the nation in passer rating and is in the top 10 in all other passing categories. Notre Dame is not ranked in the top 25 but is 4-1 and on a three game winning streak.

The only reason why I have him up here is because he is tops passing and his team has a pretty good record, usually non-top 25 teams don’t have Heisman Candidates but Clausen is an exception.

Notre Dame has been expecting this kind of recognition from Clausen since they signed him in 2007 as the #1 quarterback prospect in the country. Unless the Fighting Irish win out and get to the National Championship game, Clausen has no shot at winning it this year.

Case-Keenum

Case Keenum, QB, Houston- Junior

1,696 yards, 13 TD’s and a 154.9 rating

Keenum is third in the nation in passing yards and touchdowns so far this year and is reaping the benefits of a great offense at Houston.

Historically Houston have always had quarterbacks with big numbers but not alot of wins but this year Keenum leads a 3-1 Cougars team and is very close to climbing back into the top 25 after suffering a loss to Conference USA West foe UTEP.

Keenum seems to be another great in the long line of quarterbacks at Houston but with only one winning the Heisman, ESPN Analyst Andre Ware, his chances are extremely slim this year.

gerhart

Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford- Senior

120 carries, 650 yards and eight touchdowns

Gerhart is the nation’s leader in rushing yards and the Heisman race looks very funny without a running back in it. I was expecting California running back Jahvid Best to be the leading rusher but Gerhart is the man.

He’s gained 650 yards and has scored eight touchdowns which ties him for third the country. Gerhart will more than likely lose this race because his team is not very good and everyone knows that the Heisman winner is usually the best player on the best team and Gerhart is neither the best player in the nation is he playing for the best team

golden

Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame- Junior

33 catches, 602 yards and 4 TD’s

Tate has had some nice statistical games this year for the Fighting Irish including a nine catch 244 yard performance in overtime against the Washington Huskies.

Tate is fourth in the nation in receiving yards and has made big play after big play this year and the Heisman voters love big plays in big games.

Unfortunately for Tate the history of the Heisman Trophy doesn’t look to be in his favor, only two wide receivers have ever won the Heisman in its 63-year history (Notre Dame’s Tim Brown in 1987 and Michigan’s Desmond Howard in 1991). Either way Tate is still a great receiver and looks to have a bright future ahead of him.

I'd love to see Jacory get it. I have to remind myself that he's a sophomore because his demeanor and temperament is impressive for such a young guy.

However, if Tebow comes back from this concussion injury and plays as well as he has in the past, he's going to be a lock for the Heisman.
