Opposite End Zone’s Top Five NFL Free Agency Signings

Will Anquan Boldin’s signing with the Ravens be named the #1 free agency signing by Kyle and Khai?

Opposite End Zones With Kyle and Khai brings you their top five free agent signings for 2009:

5. Karlos Dansby, Linebacker, Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins didn’t really need Dansby but it was still a good signing for them because they got rid of disgruntled linebacker Joey Porter just hours into free agency. The Dolphins had a bigger need at safety but lost out on former Miami Hurricane Antrel Rolle to the New York Giants.

Dansby won’t WOW you with a tremendous amount of tackles, sacks or interceptions but what he brings is consistency and playmaking abilities at the linebacker position.

Anyone remember in the Packers vs Cardinals overtime game in the NFC Playoffs, someone picking up an Aaron Rodgers fumble and running it in for a touchdown that gave the Cardinals the victory? Yep, it was Karlos Dansby who made the big play for the Cardinals defense that moved them into the second round of the playoffs. So Dansby doesn’t give the Dolphins what Joey Porter gave them in the sack department, but does give them a solid play maker on an inconsistent Dolphins defense.

4. Dunta Robinson, Cornerback, Atlanta Falcons

By bringing in Robinson, the Falcons have filled a much need void at the cornerback position since losing current Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall to the Oakland Raiders. The Falcons have tried since then to get a cornerback that can help solidify a defense that has been questionable over the years and feel they finally have him in Robinson. He is not a “shut down” corner by any means, but is solid enough to contain any teams top wide receiver. Robinson, born and raised in Athens, Georgia, is a hometown kid that can do alot for his hometown team on defense.

Robinson was drafted by the Houston Texans 10th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft and became a starter immediately. In his rookie year, he recorded 87 tackles and six interceptions.

3. Julius Peppers, Defensive End, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears could have gotten away with lining up defensive ends Mark Anderson and Alex Brown this year, but there’s nothing wrong with adding a guy like Julius Peppers to the mix. The Bears seem to be preparing for a possible loss of Adewale Ogunleye in free agency.

Peppers adds an instant 10-12 sacks to their defense and will bring some athleticism to the Bears defense. The Bears defense had 35 sacks last year with half of those coming from the defensive ends (17) and seek more production from the ends next year and signing Peppers definitely gives them that.

Peppers, the Panthers all-time sack leader, is known as one of the most athletic and versatile players in the NFL. In his career, Peppers has eight blocked kicks (extra points and field goal attempts) and has had double-digit sacks in all but two of his seven seasons.

2. Antrel Rolle, Safety, New York Giants

The New York Giants had an awful defensive campaign last year and the weakest link was the secondary. Going into the 2009 season, the Giants were missing former first round pick Aaron Ross due to a number of injuries and losing star safety Kenny Phillips in the second game of the year against the Dallas Cowboys, the Giants struggled to find secondary help and to say the least, none of them panned out.

Though Rolle has only played two years at the safety position, after being drafted by the Cardinals as a cornerback, Rolle has shown a vast improvement since the transition was made in 2008. The Giants signing Rolle will take some of the pressure off of fellow Miami Hurricane Kenny Phillips and bring some much needed athleticism to the Giants secondary. Phillips and Rolle give arguably the best safety tandem in the NFL and without a doubt, the best safety tandem in Giants history.

1. Anquan Boldin, Wide Receiver, Baltimore Ravens

After longing for a big time wide receiver, the Baltimore Ravens finally made the move and brought in former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin.

Boldin was red flagged at the 2003 NFL Combine for running a 4.71, which caused him to be a second round pick by the Cardinals, but has turned out to be one the most coveted wide receivers in free agency that past few years.

As a rookie, Boldin had 101 catches and was the only rookie selected to the 2004 Pro Bowl. Boldin also set an NFL record for most receiving yards by a rookie in his first game (217), tied Billy Sims for most yards from scrimmage by a rookie in his first game (217), and holds the NFL record for most receptions in the first 26 games of an NFL career (157) as well as the fastest to record 300 career receptions (47 games).

The Ravens have honestly been looking for a big play wide receiver since they became an expansion team in 1996. Boldin will easily the best receiver to put on a Ravens jersey in 2010. Boldin’s fearless attitude, amazing toughness, hands and big play ability will give quarterback Joe Flacco a nice big target to throw to when he needs a big play from the receiver position.

About Opposite End Zones:

OELogoThey say opposites attract. Men are from Mars and women are from Venus. The battle of the sexes. You know the sayings…and if you’ve lived long enough you’ve probably experienced it first hand. Men and women have been battling over topics for many years…nothing is off limits. We debate about, love, life, money, hobbies and some of us even debate sports. Yes sports, the “forbidden territory” that most women avoid is indeed sports. Some don’t like or understand it and would just rather not be bothered, but for a good percentage of women, there’s nothing more enjoyable than to not only watch sports, but to get into a heated debate about them with a man is the best of both worlds. And that’s what we say too…as healthy debates are only the beginning of what Kyle and Khai have entered into while discussing sports. The conversations are entertaining and regardless of who’s right, wrong or otherwise…everything goes out the window as opinions are expressed and analysis of the game take center stage.
