Oregon RB LaMichael James Arrested On Domestic Violence Charges

Oregon sophomore running back LaMichael James was reportedly arrested on charges of domestic violence Wednesday.

The Oregonian is reporting James was arraigned on five charges – one count of strangulation, two counts of fourth-degree assault and two counts of physical harassment – stemming from an altercation with his girlfriend.

A pretrial hearing has been set for March 24, according to the paper, which cited the police report.

A statement from Oregon head coach Chip Kelly was obtained by the paper.

“We are concerned anytime a student-athlete is mentioned in a police report,” Kelly said. “We do not condone any behavior that doesn’t meet University standards or our football program’s standards, and we go to great lengths to actively educate our student-athletes regarding appropriate conduct.

“We have the utmost confidence in the local law enforcement authorities to determine the facts in all instances involving our student-athletes, and will reserve further judgment or comment until further information is available.”

James was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year last season as a redshirt and ranked ninth in the nation with 1,546 rushing yards. He topped 100 yards on the ground nine times and did so for seven straight games after taking over as the Ducks’ featured back following the suspension of LeGarrette Blount. Blount was suspended for the rest of the regular season following a post-game meltdown against Boise State in the season opener.

In 13 games last season, including Oregon’s Rose Bowl loss to Ohio State, James scored 14 touchdowns and added 168 yards on 17 catches.
