Panthers Sign Rookie DE Everette Brown

With memories of NFL draft night still fresh in his mind, Everette Brown is ready to go to work for the Carolina Panthers.

Brown, the Panthers’ top selection when they took him in the second round with the 43rd pick of April’s draft, agreed to terms with Carolina on Saturday. He said he expects to sign the contract – a four-year deal worth $4.3million with $2.6875million in guarantees – by Monday.

Brown, a defensive end thought by many experts to be a first-round prospect, was snapped up by the Panthers when he remained available early in the second round. They thought so much of him that they traded their 2010 first-round pick to San Francisco to get him.

So it’s not that Brown – a native of the eastern-N.C. town of Stantonsburg who played at Florida State – isn’t happy to be with his home-state team. He just figured to go somewhere else a little sooner.

“I’ll have a little chip on my shoulder from every time I was passed up on the night of April 25,” said Brown.

“A lot of it is never having been in the situation where I was passed up when they’re picking teams. Even in Little League.

“So, having that go on before my eyes is really motivating me.”

Brown has been working out in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., since July5, concentrating mostly on his conditioning. That, he said, is the best way for him to prepare for training camp, which opens Aug.3 in Spartanburg.

“My goal is to go as high as I can go with this team,” he said. “I want to wreak havoc and really fly to the ball. That’s what the whole defense will be doing, and it starts with the four guys up front. Great things happen when 11 guys are doing that.”
