Patriots Hosting Former Bills WR Josh Reed

Free-agent wide receiver Josh Reed, who has spent his entire eight-year NFL career with the Buffalo Bills, is scheduled to visit the New England Patriots on Monday, a league source confirmed.

ProFootballTalk.com first noted that Reed was set to visit.

Reed, 29, would add another veteran presence at the position if he is signed. With Wes Welker rehabilitating from torn ligaments in his left knee, the Patriots have only Randy Moss and recently signed David Patten as veteran targets, and Patten is considered a longer shot to earn a roster spot. A player like Reed could project to a Jabar Gaffney-like role, with the flexibility to line up at various spots.

One of the primary questions with the 5-foot-10, 210-pound Reed is how much of his production was a result of quarterback instability and an overall shaky offense in Buffalo in recent years. He totaled 27 receptions for 291 yards in 2009, his lowest output since 2004.

With quarterback Tom Brady throwing him the ball, perhaps those numbers would spike.
