Ravens CB Samari Rolle To Make Retirement Official

Former Baltimore Ravens cornerback Samari Rolle has pretty much done it all in the National Football League. Now, he’s ready for the next stage of his life.

Rolle said on Thursday he’s officially retiring from the league after being advised by doctors not to play any more following two neck surgeries. Rolle’s contract was terminated by the Ravens last month, signaling the end of his playing days. He missed all of the 2009 season with a neck injury.

“Being that I got to play 12 years and play in a Super Bowl, I got to do everything I wanted to do but didn’t get a ring,’’ Rolle said. “I am OK with that. I honestly wish deep down I could’ve gotten to stay with one team my whole career, but it doesn’t always work like that. But it is how it is. I had good people around me and very good coaches. I was fortunate. I have some great memories.’’

Rolle, 33, played from 1998-2004 with the Titans. He was selected in the second round of the draft after playing at Florida State. He turned into an All-Pro cornerback with the Titans, and one of the leaders on a team that went to the playoffs four times from 1999-2003, including a trip to Super Bowl XXXIV at the end of the ’99 season.

Rolle recorded 23 of his 31 career interceptions with the Titans, including a 2000 season when had seven interceptions and was named All-Pro. Rolle also had six interceptions for the Titans in 2003. In all, Rolle played in 85 games with the Titans over seven seasons.

After being released by the Titans for salary cap reasons, he signed with the Ravens in 2005.

Rolle was a key member of Baltimore’s secondary for several years, but in recent seasons battled injuries. He intercepted three passes in 2008, one year after being diagnosed with epilepsy. But he was limited to just 16 games over the last three seasons. Rolle hasn’t filed his retirement papers yet, but plans to at some point.

“I have gone to several doctors and been told it is not safe (to play),’’ Rolle said. “After having two neck surgeries the same season, that really hurt my body a lot and has affected me. So that’s where I stand.’’

Rolle makes his home in Boca Raton, Fla. His wife, Danisha, is pregnant with the couple’s’ third child, a son, due next week.
