Rutgers T Anthony Davis Says He’s The Best Tackle In The Draft
Rutgers left tackle Anthony Davis played a game of role reversal today. Exchanging his helmet and pads for a stopwatch and note pad, he boldly proclaimed he’s the best tackle in the upcoming NFL Draft — and it’s not even close.
“I’m not just saying it because it’s me, I watch film, too,” Davis told The Star-Ledger. “If I felt it was somebody else, I would say it was him. But just watching the film, I think it’s like hands-down that I’m the best tackle in the country. I don’t think I’m wrong for saying it because I truly believe it.”
Prior to the NFL Combine in February, many NFL scouts felt the same way, giving the athletically gifted Davis the nod over Bryan Bulaga (Iowa), Bruce Campbell (Maryland), Vladimir Ducasse (Massachusetts) and Russell Okung (Oklahoma State).
But then an avalanche of negativity formed that landed the Piscataway native in a free fall down draft boards across the country, threatening his projection as a top-10 pick.
The 6-5, 323-pound Davis lifted 225 pounds only 21 times at the NFL Scouting Combine, which alarmed scouts. He apparently didn’t come off well in interviews as he was peppered with questions about a pair of suspensions and why he reported to summer camp last season 25 pounds overweight. Then he was a no-show at the Rutgers Pro Day on March 10, standing up nearly NFL 50 scouts, many of whom came to see him.
