Saints CB Tracy Porter’s Interception For A TD That Wasn’t Supposed To Happen
Look at this picture and tell me what you see on the left side with the red circles, I see a 15-yard penalty for clipping. New Orleans Saints cornerback Tracy Porter’s 74-yard interception for a touchdown was not supposed to happen and here is why, in the NFL rule book a clip or block in the back is defined as an illegal block in which a player hits an opponent from behind and that clearly is what happened here.
Saints defensive end Will Smith blatently blocked Colts quarterback Peyton Manning in the back during the interception that put the Saints on top to stay 31-17. If the referee had thrown the flag for clipping, the score may have been tied 24-24 and could have completely changed the outcome of this game because the Colts defense would have had a chance to stop the Saints offense and given Manning another shot to tie the game.
Maybe the referee didn’t want to throw the flag because Manning was nowhere close to making a play but the rules don’t state that it could only be called if a player is actually in position to make a play.
Just giving you something to think about.
In your opinion, Was this clipping? Would you have thrown the flag? Could this have changed the outcome of the game?

Good observation! I didn't even see that and it just makes me more pissed that they won.
the interception would still stand, with the saints backed up 15 yards from that spot
Technically i don’t think that that was a clipping because manning was facing toward Porter as if he were going to try to tackle him but when he saw Will Smith fisten to tackle him, he turned his back which was messed up on Manning’s part. In my opinion it was not clipping and the Saints are superbowl champs. WHO DAT BABY WHO DAT SAID THEY GONE BEAT DEM SAINTS!

Check your definitions. Clipping is a block that is both from behind AND at or below waist level. This is well above the waist.
lol for trying to call this a penalty…. if u watch the play, Smith was running towards Manning to block him, and then Manning just turned away to avoid the hit…. if thats a penalty, anytime a player is going to get blocked, he could just turn around so he gets hit in the back…. not a penalty…. sorry bro
Thanks Khai!!!
I know the interception would still stand, but the touchdown wouldn’t, which would have given the Colts defense an opportunity to stop them from scoring.
Why is it called block in the back, if its allowed above the waist? If it's below the waist, alot of people would call that an illegal chop block.
If that's the case, why didn't Will Smith just leave him alone? unless Manning has an amazing ability to make a tackle with his back turned, LOL.
manning wanted NO PART of making the tackle…. hes soft…. watch any INT hes ever thrown… hes never attempt to make a tackle…. Smith was just finishing his block… it wasnt even close to a penalty…. again…. if watching a kick return, if ur a defender and ur about to get blocked, u could just turn around so u get hit in the back, forcing a block in the back…. it doesnt work that way
Yes Manning is soft, that's why he stays healthy, because he doesn't even make efforts to make tackles. Maybe if he makes an effort this time, it saves his opportunity to win another ring and also save his legacy from being tarnished. I've also seen that be called clipping in other games so it's i think it's a borderline call, it all depends on who you ask.
Maybe you forgot that the Saints scored 31 of the next 38 points in the game. The Colts weren't stopping anything after the first couple series. There were missed calls for both sides. You sound like the Vikings fans last week that conviently forgot about the head slaps on Brees, among other things. Manning had a bad angle on Porter & was shoved in the side & Peyton twisted. This photo was taken out of context
Why did this tarnish his legacy? He was 9-8 in the postseason before this SB … He's no Montana, but still a great QB. The Colts D couldn't stop the Saints from the second quarter on. Have fun with your fantasy alternate end to the game. There were calls missed on both sides of the ball. Happens every game in every sport
Don't get me wrong, Manning is still great, but any conversations that come up about who the greatest of all time is, Manning will not be in the top 5, where if he had won this one, you could throw him there. Manning has had to 2 Super Bowl appearances in his career, one he beat Rex Grossman who is a nobody, not to mention, he did less in that game than he did in this one and the other is a loss to Drew Brees. Anyone can win a Super Bowl, but in order to be considered one of the greatest you need more than one ring. Even Mark Rypien has two Super Bowl rings and a Super Bowl MVP, does that make him a "GREAT" quarterback? No. Yet he has more than Manning in the post season. Manning is the greatest regular season QB in NFL history but in the postseason he's 9-9. Not even close to being the greatest of all time.
how were there calls missed for both side? i saw a lot of holding form the saints)-line that never got called, along with a couple of PI s on the saints that were not called either. it seems the refs were more for the saints than anything
I saw the replays this morning and my first thought was "did that guy just clip someone?"! I'm glad others noticed it as well. Regardless of team preference, you have to admit that a key play resulting directly in a score like this, not just a turnover which might "eventually" lead to a score, has tremendous implications for the outcome.
Conspiracy theory aside, you could TiVo the games every week and find stuff that was overlooked or missed but when it comes down to THE BIG GAME, extra diligence is due. So, when referees are selected for SuperBowl duty, you expect they have some of the best skills in their profession. In light of that, if all eyes are on the ball carrier, perhaps it just wasn't flagrant enough to warrant a flag.
I guess it's another of those "what might have been" moments that we can debate over a beer for years to come. I still expect to see the Colts, led by Manning, in another Super Bowl before he retires.
I agree @JoShmo it is something that could be debated for years, but I expect them to be back as well. Thanks for the logic and understanding of my point.
Because he is a QB? Because any defensive player would love the chance to knock his lights out? Because there wasn't anyone else to block that needed blocking from his position. If a QB doesn't back away he is fair game, or have we already forgot about a QB called Kurt Warner?
From the video it looks to me like the block was initiated from the side and Manning turned away.
I honestly don't think the call would of helped them either. It would of given the Saints the ability to run down the clock, leaving the final score at least 24 to 17. You would have more of an argument if the Colts were able to score at least once afterwards. Instead they failed having far more time then the Saints would of left them.
You never know what the Colts defense could have done if they had gotten a shot at stopping Brees, sure they didn't look very good, but its one of those you never know kinda things.
I agree @Mark, there were more for the Saints but it happens in just about every game.
I've seen that be called a clip a few times, not often but its been called before.
ANYONE CAN WIN A SUPERBOWL???!!! All you are proving is that you have no credibility and should not be blogging as if you have some football knowledge. First, you have a still shot taken after manning turns to dive on the ground, and try to pass it off as smith "pushing" hime from behind. That has NEVER been called and never will be. Second, block in the back is ten yards. (DUH! And you have a football opinion?!) Third, I think Manning proved beyound a doubt that he could not score on the Saints as the game went into the latter minutes. How did you come up with 24 to 24?
You never know what the Colts could have done if they had gotten a shot.
have you watched the video? porter was showing a run up the sidelines and manning was going after him. when porter cut back, manning tried to turn and RAN INTO will smith. seems you are trying to nuance a single photo into a win. kinda sad…!! and if it was called… (woulda been a bad call and you would have been defending it)… but the saints would have marched right down and gone ahead and left zero time on the clock.
woulda-coulda-shoulda… WHHHAAAA
I'm not a fan of either team so it doesn't matter to me, but thanks for your comment.
Perfectly legal block.
I saw a lot of holding on the colts part as well that didnt get called. I think it is sad that when your team dont win you find excuses. The Saints won they are Super Bowl champions. I am going to keep reading because i bet some idiot is going to blame somebody for that missed field goal. Congratulations to the Saints they had been counted out all season but they pulled thru. For those whose team didnt win, i wish your team just as much success next season.
I wish Manning and the Colts all the luck in the future and they deserve another Super Bowl victory before he retires. On that play where Manning threw the interception the reason a clip was not called is because just before contact was made Manning turned his back to the person intending to block him, therefore deeming it a no call situation. Had he not turned his back he would have looked like Kurt Warner after his interception. I laugh at all of the comments by the conspiracy theorist. It is only when your team is not winning is when it is a conspiracy and that says a lot about the fan themselves. If everybody had good sportsmanship we would have different post instead of creating theories of favoratism and cheating.
I noticed the block in the back (not clipping, but still illegal) on the replay right after the play happened. It was only the most important play in the game. Refs blew it BIG TIME, just like they did on the facemask call not called against Arizona on the sacek and fumble of Aaron Rodgers that won the game for the Cardinals in overtime. And not one peep of an apology from the league.
I wish them luck as well, thanks for the comment.
Great comment @CMO357. Thanks for stopping by.
Manning turned to try and make the block. If the blocker engages him at that moment, then it isn't a block in the back.
thats NOT a clip manning pulled a Dieon and avoided trying to make a tackle ref will never call that . Plus if tehy woulda called it it was post possesion anyways and the int still woulda counted awwww poor lil colts lmao
You guys all need to just shut up. Its a GAME. Mistakes are made all the time. Does it really matter if it was clipping or not? No, the better team came out on top. I think that the game was called fairly and the Saints were obviously the better team. All you guys ranting on here isn't gonna change the fact that the Saints are the Champions. They deserve it, they played their hearts out for the city of New Orleans and their fans.
YOU ALL SUCK GET A LIFE SAINTS WIN GET OVER IT……….
Payton, as with Brady, who are two weak, hate contact, too good to get hit QB's, turned his back as the block was happening to avoid contact. He didn't even try to make an attempt to possibly make the the tackle. All he did was run to the sideline and turn his back. Run the whole clip Skippy
