Seminoles Signs Coach Leonard Hamilton To Five-Year Extension

Florida State basketball coach Leonard Hamilton has signed a five-year deal that extends his contract to April 30, 2014 and nearly doubles his compensation.

Hamilton, who took FSU to the NCAA basketball tournament as well as the ACC Tournament Championship game this past season, will be paid a base salary of $205,000. That’s a slight increase from his previous contract. But his total compensation, including base salary, comes to $1.5 million as compared to just under $800,000 previously.

The total package, including bonuses and compensation, could reach $2.09 million.

FSU released the contract at the Tallahassee Democrat’s request on Thursday. It was signed by Hamilton on Monday prior to the basketball team leaving for a trip to Spain.

Terms of this contract include radio/television compensation of $500,000 and $630,000 for speaking engagements and public relations. Both are covered by the Athletic Development Fund which is funded by Seminole Boosters. Through the school’s contact with Nike, Hamilton will receive $165,000.

Bonuses could bring Hamilton another $590,000. Bonuses are also funded by Seminole Boosters and include $25,000 for a team graduation rate of 84 percent or greater, $50,000 for winning the ACC regular season championship and $50,000 if FSU ranks in the AP final 10.

Postseason bonuses include $50,000 for winning the ACC Tournament, $50,000 for making the NCAA Tournament, an additional $50,000 for reaching the Sweet 16, an additional $50,000 for being in the Elite Eight and $100,000 more for participating in the Final Four. Win it all, and the NCAA postseason experience would put $325,000 in Hamilton’s’ pocket.

Hamilton has been at FSU for seven seasons. His teams have won at least 19 games five times and participated in the postseason five times. The Seminoles went 25-10 this past season. Hamilton is 131-96 at FSU.
