St. Thomas Aquinas High School (FL) Football Team Gets National Recognition
St. Thomas High School in Fort Lauderdale, FL is ranked #5 in the nation in the pre-season poll.
Do they deserve this attention…..YES!!!! according to the history of St. Thomas football but do I think they deserve it, NO WAY!!! and here’s why:
If everyone did what St. Thomas did all the teams in South Florida would be in the national polls. All St. Thomas does is RECRUIT. I have very little if any respect for the St. Thomas program. Number one they lose to Lakeland seems like every year in the championship game, number two, they play in class 5A and when they lose to someone in South Florida its always to a 6A team.
St. Thomas will get kids into college but they never make it to the pros and be successful there. Michael Irvin is the only one and he started off at Piper. I look at Ely and they had James Jones, Zack Crockett, Henri Crockett, Tyrone Carter, Jerome McDougle and Corey Simon, all had successful careers in the NFL. Dillard had Isaac Bruce, Lorenzo White, James Bostic, Chris Gamble and Frank Sanders. Even Piper had Bennie and Brian Blades.
St. Thomas is just another one of those high school football programs that get the best into their program, win, get a few into college and never hear from them again. All the other schools in the county have to deal with the kids in their district while St. Thomas gets the best kids from those districts and everyone the other schools deal with whatever is left over.
That’s just like telling the NCAA that no one could recruit in Florida but the Florida schools, if that happened no one else in the country would win the National Championship. I understand that’s how it is, but is it fair? NO!!! Anyone with a good football mind can recruit the best players and win. St. Thomas is not as special as they seem. They get no respect here.
