Super Bowl XLVIII To Be Played In The New Meadowlands

NFL owners have awarded Super Bowl XLVIII to the New York/New Jersey region.

The New Meadowlands Stadium, located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will be the site for the Super Bowl after the 2013 season. The $1.6 billion stadium, which seats 82,500, opened April 10, 2010 and will be the new home for both the New York Giants and Jets.

The league owners, who are meeting in suburban Dallas, voted for New York/New Jersey over South Florida (Miami) and Tampa Bay, Florida.

It will be the first time the game will be played in a cold weather climate after previously being held in warm weather locales and indoor venues.

The decision was not made until the fourth and final round of voting. None of the three regions gained the necessary 24 votes (75 percent) in the first two rounds. After tallying the fewest votes, South Florida was eliminated. Neither New York/New Jersey or Tampa Bay again received the necessary 24 votes in round three forcing a last vote to be decided by a simple majority of at least 17-15.

“It’s a unique opportunity to play the biggest game in the world on the biggest stage in the world” said Giants president and CEO John Mara.
