The Buffalo Bills Making It Happen On Offense With Seventh Round Picks & Undrafted Players

What do Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, running back Fred Jackson, fullback Corey McIntyre and wide receivers Steve Johnson, David Nelson and Donald Jones have in common besides playing on the same team? They were all either drafted in the seventh round or were undrafted.

Fitzpatrick, a seventh-round pick from Harvard in 2005, Jackson, who played for Division III Coe College, came from the National Indoor Football League and the World League, McIntyre went undrafted out of West Virginia, Fitzpatrick’s top target, Steve Johnson was drafted in the seventh round out of Kentucky, Nelson was undrafted out of the University of Florida and Donald Jones was an undrafted free agent out of Youngstown State.

The Buffalo Bills are 3-0 with the most surprising win coming Sunday afternoon’s 34-31 win over the New England Patriots. Fitzpatrick threw for 369 yards and two touchdowns, Jackson, who was last week’s NFL leading rusher, finished with 74 rushing yards and 87 receiving yards and a touchdown. Jackson along with wide receivers Johnson, Nelson and Jones combined for 24 catches for 366 yards and a touchdown caught by Johnson.

Bills head coach Chan Gailey has to be sleeping like a baby at night knowing that he has taken this team from being in the NFL’s proverbial basement to the top of the AFC East early in the 2011 season and doing it with players that were not drafted even higher than the guy they just beat on Sunday, the great Tom Brady.

Depending upon what happens with the Bills this season, they could prove to be a team that has done the unthinkable by going as far as they could during the season with virtually an undrafted offense.
