Titans Sign Former Eagles LB Will Witherspoon To Three-Year Deal
on a three-year contract, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Witherspoon, an 8-year veteran who played last season with the Eagles, visited with team officials on Tuesday and remained in Nashville on Tuesday evening.
His contract is worth $11 million and includes $5 million in guarantees.
The 29-year-old linebacker was released by the Eagles on March 5. He spent his first 4 seasons with the Panthers (2002-05) before signing a 6-year, $33 million deal with the Rams, where he played from 2006-09. Witherspoon was traded from the Rams to the Eagles last season.
The Titans need help at the position. Veteran linebacker Keith Bulluck is recovering from ACL surgery and his future with the team is uncertain, because of the injury and how much money he might command in a new contract. The Titans have told his agent they’re still interested in him.
The Titans last week put a 1st round tender on starting middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch, a restricted free agent, while outside linebacker David Thornton is recovering from offseason shoulder/pectoral surgery and is scheduled to make $4 million in base salary in 2010.
Witherspoon was scheduled to earn $5 million in base pay in 2010, which led to his release from the Eagles, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Witherspoon, who played in college at Georgia, has played both outside and inside linebacker in his career. His best game with the Eagles last season came after he was traded, when he had nine tackles, a sack, a forced a fumble and interception he returned for a nine-yard touchdown against the Redskins.
