Vikings WR Bernard Berrian Says Bears Defense Not What It Used To Be

Defense used to be a word synonymous with the Chicago Bears.

But the Bears’ D has fallen on hard times, and its intimidating reputation isn’t what it once was.

“I think it is gone,” said Vikings receiver Bernard Berrian, who played for the Bears from 2004 to 2007. “People being intimidated about who they got around there, that isn’t working for them anymore.

“But, they still got some exceptional players over there.”

The Bears’ defense was ranked second in the NFL in 2005 and fifth in 2006. In 2007, Berrian’s last season in Chicago, the unit was ravaged with injuries and finished 28th.

The defense was 21st last season and is 13th this season.

The Bears are 23rd defending the run, and they aren’t generating as many game-changing plays.

One of the top playmakers has struggled on and off the field.

Six-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker Brian Urlacher had a disappointing 2008, and he suffered a season-ending dislocated wrist injury in the 2009 season opener.

“Urlacher being out is huge for them,” Berrian said. “He makes a big difference on their defense.”

With a 4-6 record, including a three-game losing streak, the Bears desperately need to win Sunday.

“This is a must-win for them,” Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe said. “This is their season, so they’re going to come and play their best.”

Added left tackle Bryant McKinnie, “We’re not expecting them to just come in and lay down.”
