Volunteers Head Coach Phillip Fulmer to Step Down
Tennessee Volunteers head coach Phillip Fulmer will not return for the 2009 season. Fulmer is in danger of having his second losing season in four years. His current record is 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the SEC. Things fell very far, very fast for Fulmer. He went from being in the SEC Championship last year to being the worst team in the conference.
Fulmer met with Tennessee officials Monday morning and both parties came to the conclusion that it was best for both parties that Fulmer not return for the ’09 season. Fulmer is leaving his alma mater with well over 100 wins and a National Championship. He’s been on the Volunteers coaching staff for 28 years, 16 of them as the head coach.
He has been a great coach for a long time and since this is a “what have you done for me lately” day and age, Fulmer’s best bet was to get out right now before they fired him. Fulmer will be a head coach somewhere else, I’m sure.
