What Kind Of Conditioning Program Is Nick Saban Running At Alabama?

First it was Cincinnati Bengals tackle Andre Smith, now its Ravens defensive tackle Terrence Cody.

Cody was recently put on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list because he couldn’t pass the conditioning test in Baltimore and that leads me to question the conditioning and weight program that Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide football program have implemented.

Saban has been known to produce some quality NFL players but issues like this don’t make him look good at all. I wonder if high school football players considering Alabama are keep these two players in mind when it comes time to decide on a school to continue their football playing days.

Is Alabama preparing these guys to play in the NFL or just getting them ready from week to week so they could compete at a high level for the Crimson Tide?

There was a lot of noise made about Urban Meyer not getting former Gators quarterback Tim Tebow’s throwing motion NFL ready, how about Saban’s conditioning program?

Smith and Cody are two very good players that have been failed by the Alabama program. Even if the players refused to work out, Saban and the Alabama conditioning coach should be in their butts about keeping themselves in shape for the season and for the possibility of playing in the NFL.

What is Nick Saban doing?

If there in such poor shape, why were they starters on a National Championship Football team, they were some of the top players nationwide in there position. I think the NFL should wait to see how they perform in game time before putting them on the PUP list

It looks like he is getting arrested or something lol

MK ROB give St. Nick a break. He did win a National Chamionship at not one but 2 different SEC schools. Every program will have a couple fat boys that don't get it. Cody and Smith will eat themselves right out of the league. Remember Ronaldo Mc Clain is a chiseled specimen from the Bama program.

Sigh…I feel turn. On one hand, yes as an athlete you should make sure you take care of your body and ensure you're in top condition. But the program that Saban is running is clearly faulty and now Cody is being punished b/c he wasn't properly molded into a complete athlete. Tough break for the kid.

July 27, 2010 at 6:49 pm

I agree with you but the NFL has its standards that they must stick by so that's why this is happening to Cody.

July 27, 2010 at 10:56 pm

I agree with you. McClain also has a brother in the NFL and I'm sure LeRon has told him a number of things about the NFL and what they expect when it comes to conditioning. It's just funny how the two players that have been picked on the past couple years have been under Saban's watch. This also wouldn't have been an issue for me if it this had happened in the past and if it did, it would come from different programs, not the same one. Great comment! BTW My high school team was the Plantation Colonels

Thank you Khai! I believe these coaches should be in that locker room pushing these kids like our coach pushed us. I guess they don't care anymore and let them choose their own path.

July 27, 2010 at 11:02 pm

everybody realizes that Cody hasnt been in one alabama practice or conditioning program for almost 8 months now right. should saban and the rest of the staff have monitor them after they,re gone? also cody was over 400 lbs b4 he came to the tide if it wasnt for the conditioning program at bama he wouldve never had the chance to go anywhere. Alabama is one of the reasons the dude even had a shot. roll tide

July 28, 2010 at 1:12 am

Cody looks like he is petrified for having to expose his man boobs. Awesome. Insecure millionaires the size of Yeti.
PS High Fructose Corn Syrup laughs as everyone points the finger at each other.

Is it Saban's fault that two of his players fell off after leaving? Cody arrived at Alabama with a weight problem. He slimmed down while playing, and then ballooned back up after the season was over.

Is it the coaches fault when a player doesn't take care of himself? No, it is not.

July 28, 2010 at 10:55 am

If Cody slimmed down at all while he was at Alabama, I never saw it. This dude has looked like this since he's been at Alabama and should have been fixed while he was there. Like I've been telling everyone, its just funny that two of Saban's players are the butt of the fat pictures that are used online.

July 28, 2010 at 1:38 pm

Does anyone remember that Saban wouldn't let Cody play on third downs until he got his weight down to a certain point? That was one incentive he used. Anyway, Saban isn't known for being soft on players. He certainly can't be responsible for them after they leave Teams who don't win like Bama or have a top-notch coach like Saban are always ready to make a big deal about every little thing to try and take Bama down. It's a natural reaction of losers to find fault with winners!!

This kid went to an elite college football program and he should have the mindset of an elite player. There's a difference between "big boned' and just 'fat." This kid is not a kid, he is a Grown Ass Man, whose tits are probably bigger than his girlfriend's! He looks like P.U.P list candidate to me, the last thing we need is another athlete dying on practice fields from summer heat due to Lack of Conditioning, Lack of Nutrition, and Dehydration. Do better MaN!

July 28, 2010 at 6:20 pm

Rolando McClain and LeRon McClain are not brothers.

July 28, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Ok, so they are cousins. Thanks for the correction.

July 29, 2010 at 12:54 am

The Tide did give him a chance, I've never heard of any players in this situation and Andre Smith's picture is awful. 2 of Saban's players.

July 29, 2010 at 12:55 am

It's a funny thing but I believe Cody will slim down when camp starts and the Ravens along with Ray Lewis will do what Alabama failed to do and that's to make this kid workout.

July 29, 2010 at 12:56 am

Thanks for the comment but name calling is unecessary. This is strictly my opinion, I don't care if it was Temple's head coach with two of their players in this situation. My feelings are my feelings. Thanks again.

July 28, 2010 at 8:59 pm

I agree with you Lance. Thanks for the comment.

July 29, 2010 at 1:00 am

I see this has already been pointed out, but Cody was in much worse shape prior to coming to Bama, in fact, his scholarship out of Jr. College was only good if he got down to a certain weight. While at Bama, he did indeed get in better shape (but never achieved what Saban required to play in certain situations). Saban actually had a constant battle with A. Smith, who had spiraled out of shape under the previous staff. Besides McClain being mentioned above, there are several others this and last year that were/are in tip top shape going into the League under the Saban staff, so it seems that the two you point out are the exception rather than the norm — and under tutilege of ofther staffs probably would not have got a chance in the League and thus would not have been news at all.

July 29, 2010 at 1:04 pm

Cody lost over 50 pounds while he was at Alabama. He hasn't been in the UA workout program in months. This article is the biggest bunch of BS that I've read.

July 29, 2010 at 1:07 pm

This might be the most ridiculous sports-related article I've ever read. I believe Cody entered the program at over 400 lbs. If you think Saban is running a terrible S & C program because two guys are huge you're simply looking for something to bash him about. I'd suggest taking an actual trip down there and check it out for yourself. I bet you'll find that it's one of the most intense and strongest S & C programs in the nation.

July 29, 2010 at 1:07 pm

Thanks for stopping by.

July 29, 2010 at 1:11 pm

Like I said previously, its just funny that these two players are the butt (no pun intended) jokes when it comes to players being out of shape and the pictures of these two looking like less than NFL Football players.

July 29, 2010 at 1:13 pm

It may be the most intense but it doesn't look good for the program when two of their players are the butt (no pun intended) of the internet photo jokes. I'm a huge Miami Hurricanes fan and Warren Sapp, Bryant McKinnie and Vince Wilfork never came into camp looking like this and they were just as big and some bigger than these two. Miami is known for an intense one as well but never has any player come out looking like this. If it was one player from Ole Miss and one from Oregon, this article wouldn't even be existing, but since its two Alabama players, it raises some questions for me.

July 29, 2010 at 1:19 pm

not cousins either, genius. Rolando McClain and Le'Ron McLain are two different spellings

Cody was over 400+ pounds when he came to alabama and has his playing weight at 360

why do all of the television broadcasts of alabama games have a small segment on the s&c program at alabama? why does alabama physically beat the snot out of every opponent? weak article

July 29, 2010 at 9:54 am

Nope – they're not cousins either.

July 29, 2010 at 10:43 am

Well they were both drafted in the first 3 rounds. Smith started as a rookie and Cody will play a lot as a rookie. I like the way you took the two worst conditioned players in Saban's tenure at Bama and then ask "what is he doing?". Cody dropped over 50 pounds after he signed with Bama. If he goes anywhere else he wouldn't have the oppurtunity that he has. As for Smith, he was always heavy but very gifted. He'll either figure it out or he won't stick around. Julio, Ingram, Richardson, Kareem Jackson, Arenas, etc. also play(ed) for Saban and they are in fantastic physical condition.

July 29, 2010 at 2:47 pm

1. Well I guess Wikipedia sucks because it says that they are cousins there, so blame Wikipedia for feeding out wrong information.

2. According to the Ravens website the name is spelled LeRon McClain I've inserted the link for reference. The Ravens are sad if they don't know how to spell their own players name. So who am I to believe, you or the Ravens website ?http://www.baltimoreravens.com/People/Players/Under_Contract-Own_Rights/LeRon_McClain.aspx

Great comment John! I think my Miami Hurricanes would win that contest.

July 29, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Great comment stump! Thanks for the input.

July 29, 2010 at 10:53 am

Nice job of jumping the gun to help satisfy your agenda to bash Saban. Cody passed his conditioning test today and is on the field.

July 29, 2010 at 12:36 pm

Yeah MKROB this is the current Colonel Coach in charge from Pompano Beach.

July 29, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Many programs stay on former players to use the university facilities to stay in top shape and work on fundamentals during off season AFTER THEY LEAVE (actually, with most programs you never really "leave"). They also stay on them about completing a degree if they haven't already. Top level programs have facilities superior to most pro facilities and that's where you'll find many pro players during off season, especially early summer. An advantage for the school is these pros are working out with the college players on campus with no restrictions. Lots of "coaching" takes place during those workouts.

July 29, 2010 at 2:39 pm

Yeah I heard that but he should have passed the first time. This is his job and it doesnt look good when fail tests on the job. Thanks for the input.

July 29, 2010 at 7:55 pm

Unless these guys have very bad genes, Cody and Smith should have fixed this issue while they are at Alabama and Saban and the S&C coach should have been on their tails everyday about it.

July 29, 2010 at 8:01 pm

LOL, this is the first time I've seen you comment. Glad to see you on. Thanks for stopping by.

July 29, 2010 at 8:03 pm

This is one of the dumbest "articles" I've ever read…obviously just a blatant attack piece in a weak attempt to hurt recruiting. Ever seen Rolando McClain, Javy Arenas, and the rest of the chiseled athletic freaks? Julio Jones? Did you watch the LSU game last year where the bengal tigers were dropping like flies left and right while the entire Bama team kept coming at them? You sir, are an idiot. You take the examples of two guys well over 300lbs and expect them to have the physique of a 230lbs LB?

July 31, 2010 at 11:18 am

You do realize that the Ravens had nine other players fail the conditioning test, right?
Cody got his weight down to 350 pounds before the draft. Baltimore took on responsibility for Cody's conditioning the moment they drafted him, so the fact that he and nine others showed up to camp out of shape puts the blame squarely on the Ravens shoulders.

Also, it's simply amusing for someone to use two linemen as the measuring stick of a teams conditioning program. I guess Albert Haynesworth failing his test automatically means the Redskins have a horrible conditioning regimen. What kind of S&C program is Mike Shanahan running? LOL.

July 31, 2010 at 11:28 am

What is Nick Saban doing? WINNING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!! That's what Saban is doing. This article is a JOKE.

July 31, 2010 at 3:15 pm

UMM…he passed and is able to play! PLEASE write about something relevant! Thank you!

July 31, 2010 at 3:18 pm

Can you name two guys from the same program that look these two?

July 31, 2010 at 7:39 pm

This article got me exactly what I wanted, comments. Thanks for stopping by.

July 31, 2010 at 7:40 pm

This was relevant, when he failed the first time. In case you didn't pay attention, this written when he failed. Thanks for your comment.

July 31, 2010 at 7:41 pm

I would like to get a look at the idiot that wrote this piece. He must have buck teeth and big donkey ears. Alabama physically dominated every team they played last year. What an idiot.

August 3, 2010 at 6:17 am

You said it all,,, that explains it,,, Miami fan. Probably still sore over the unexpected ass whipping you took in the 92 Natl. Championship game.

August 3, 2010 at 6:30 am

WOW! I hope Coach Saban and (S&C) Coach Cochran read your article and comments. I'm sure it never occurred to them to monitor the health, weight, and fitness of Smith and Cody. Clearly, you're twice the coach they are. If only they had known, maybe Andre would've won the Outland Trophy and Cody would've been quick enought to block 2 field goals in the Tennessee game. Sheesh!!! Why don't you just admit that you're still sore about Nick leaving Miami?

August 4, 2010 at 10:16 am

It is not Alabama's responsibility to be sure that, between Jan. and August, these kids don't let themselves fall apart. Seriously. If a kid lets himself go, why is Saban to blame. If he didn't have this problem at Bama it is not Saban's problem. If he is not motivated with all that money on the table to meet the minimum fitness requirements, that is on him. I am not sure why any NFL team would want a person that is clearly that immature.
