Why Are NFL Teams Giving Up On Their Black Quarterbacks???

3rd-and-a-mile

After hearing all the NFL trade and draft talk, the NFL seems to be giving up on the black quarterback.
Is this all a planned or rightly so??? T
here are seven black quarterbacks that are either starters or possible starters. Here are the breakdowns and what I’ve noticed the past few years:

smith1

Baltimore Ravens- The Ravens drafted Troy Smith after a Heisman Trophy year and got a chance to start pre-Joe Flacco but I guess it wasn’t good enough. Joe Flacco did a great job his rookie year but what happened to Troy Smith getting an opportunity to compete for the starting job, it seems that Flacco had the job from the day the Ravens drafted him.

Rightly So or Not???

Answer: Rightly So, I think Smith lost his shot at the starting job when he saved the Dolphins 0-16 season.

garrard

Jacksonville Jaguars- The Jaguars released their former starter Byron Leftwich, released long time third string quarterback Quinn Gray and now looking to release current starter David Garrard in favor of USC rookie Mark Sanchez. And to add insult to injury, the Jaguars current backup is Cleo Lemon. So that’s four black quarterbacks down in this situation. The Jaguars should not be even thinking quarterback in this draft until maybe the 4th or 5th round.

Rightly So or Not???

Answer: Not, Garrard is a potential pro bowl quarterback and the blame is not his, the Jaguars need to draft him a wide receiver to help the offense. The Jaguars receivers haven’t panned out and they are punishing Garrard for this. I understand that this is a business and head coach Jack Del Rio may be looking to save his job here but the Jaguars would be making a huge mistake if they pick Sanchez to replace Garrard.

jackson

Minnesota Vikings- The Vikings benched Tavaris Jackson in favor of Gus Frerotte last year who did a pretty decent job but Jackson was drafted to be the next Vikings quarterback and now coming up this year, there were talks of the Vikings going for Jay Cutler. Now that Cutler is with the Bears, Vikings division rival, they are talking about drafting USC rookie Mark Sanchez as well. Maybe its just a coincidence but this looks like another black quarterback being swept under the rug. I don’t think has had enough opportunites to show that he could play.

Rightly So or Not???

Answer: Not, I think Jackson could be a better quarterback than Sanchez for the Vikings, but remember the theme of this post….Jackson just needs more time and a nice target, which you will find alot throughout this post.

russell

Oakland Raiders- The Raiders have JaMarcus Russell in place, but have signed veteran QB Jeff Garcia to their roster. Was Garcia signed as an insurance policy or as a starter??? I think he will be a starter. I think Raiders owner Al Davis feels that Russell has had his opportunity and he feels Garcia needs to come in and save the day, like he’s done elsewhere.

Rightly So or Not???

Answer: Not, I don’t think they’ve given Russell enough snaps in the NFL. Russell has what Al Davis likes, a STRONG ARM. He needs simply needs more snaps. But with the signing of Garcia, I think he will be the man, thus not giving Russell the snaps he needs. Not to mention, they got rid of top target Randy Moss the year they drafted Russell. The Raiders have no more Ronald Curry, the only wide receiver there is Javon Walker, which sets them up perfectly to take Missouri wide receiver Jeremy Maclin or Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree, if he falls. Russell just needs a little more time and some weapons like he had at LSU and he will be fine.

mcnabb

Philadelphia Eagles- The Eagles booed Donovan McNabb on draft day and have taken McNabb for granted. The Eagles year in and year out have been trying to replace McNabb and it hasn’t worked. They brought in Jeff Garcia, they drafted Houston’s Kevin Kolb and he’s still the starter. I don’t see the Colts, Patriots, Chargers, Giants and Saints drafting a QB in the 2nd round, trying to replace their starters. The Eagles also seem to set up McNabb to fail, he has had only one wide receiver in his career and that’s Terrell Owens, what makes it worse is that he was a free agent. They finally draft a good one (DeSean Jackson) and look what happened, they tarnished my Cowboys in the playoffs, when no one thought they would go that far. Remember, the Eagles had their best season ever with Owens in the lineup. They need to give him another target and he could lead the Eagles to the promise land.

Rightly So or Not???

Answer: Not, McNabb has a tremendous career considering the Owens issues in the media, multiple injuries, trying to be replaced and working with average talent on offense. They are building something nice with DeSean Jackson but got rid tight end L.J. Smith, who I think was their best and most consistent receiver outside of Brian Westbrook. McNabb needs a target like a Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt in this draft to help them out. There is no way the Eagles should be trying to replace McNabb, he is an elite quarterback that should have the respect of the Brady’s, Manning’s, Roethlisberger’s, and Brees’.

young

Tennessee Titans- The Titans drafted Vince Young with the understanding that he would be “the future” after they abruptly released Steve McNair. I believe Young, a pro bowler, need to recover from his physical and mental issues and go play football. I believe Vince Young has the potential to be the best of the black quarterbacks on this post, but he needs to stay in one offense and get a nice big target to throw to. The Titans brought in veteran Kerry Collins and the Titans had the best regular season of all the teams in 2008. The Titans have had two offensive coordinators in Young’s time in Tennessee and need to stick with one and let Young learn under that coordinator. One thing Young needs to be successful is consistency.

Rightly So or Not???

Answer: Rightly So,  Collins stepped in and did a good job, even though the defense and the running game was the reason why their 2008 season was so successful. Young simply needs to get himself together mentally and physically and go play ball. DONE DEAL!!!

campbell

Washington Redskins- Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell had a very nice year in 2008 and the Redskins still feel like they need someone else. During the Cutler trade talks, the Redskins were one of the names involved attempting a trade to get Cutler in Washington and for what reason, I don’t know. Campbell is a great quarterback and also needs some consistency from the coaching to continue being successful.

Rightly So or Not???

Answer: Not, Jason Campbell has the potential to be a great quarterback for the Redskins, once given an opportunity to continue in the ‘Skins offense. The Redskins should feel blessed to have a guy like Campbell, he gives you more maturity than Cutler. He was mentioned in trade talks, but did he cry, not answer phone calls and tell the Redskins organization, “TRADE ME”. No, Campbell took it all in stride and I believe he will paid very well for it.

Do you think these NFL teams are giving up on their black quarterbacks, or is this all just a coincidence???

I think there is a general lack of patience with QBs in general. While it is clear that this impatience manifests itself with Black QBs more often, it should be noted that this is more the substance of group knee jerk behavior than it is conspiracy. Ive long been convinced that when a QB doesnt develop properly, it tends to be the result of inadequate coaching just as much as poor play.

Also, I believe certain QB's aren't put in the right system. Kordell Stewart would have been great with Wildcat offense that the Dolphins run, so would Michael Vick. Teams need to realize their particular QB's talent and accentuate it by giving them an offense that they will succeed in.

I don't are what race they are… as long as they can play well…. and play for the Cowboys!

I agree, GO COWBOYS!!!

I think some of these teams are giving up on their black QBs, but it all comes in stride with how these teams operate in today's game. Most of these teams drafted these black QBs because they needed a athletic QB to scramble because of their teams' lack of blocking. As they begin to build up their offensive lines and backfield they begin to need a more traditional QB, but they've ruined the thought process of these black QBs, because they were thrown in systems that required them to not trust their blockers and run first, pass second. When teams begin to surround the QB with good blocking, it's hard for these QBs to adjust because they've been so used to running for their lives. Of this list of QBs, I think the only QB that has been able to adjust back to a traditional QB and trust his blocking is Donovan McNabb. The rest are still running for their lives or have not had enough playing time to determine if they are right for their systems.

I completely agree, that's my point in this entire post. They need to give these guys time, just like Donovan had time. The other are fairly new QB's and are already talking about being replaced. I think it defeats the purpose of drafting a QB, if you aren't going to give him time to develop. Granted they all need help, I think Garrard is a clone of McNabb and needs a weapon WR or TE to help him out in J-Ville.

I can only speak for Troy Smith, because I'm a Ravens fan. Going into training camp, the notion was that Smith had the job, they wanted Flacco to sit and the Boller experience was over. But when he got a tonsil infection along with other issues and was sick for all of those weeks, Flacco was thrown in, but clearly they didn't want that because he played poorly in the pre season. So to be fair, that's not quite accurate. He didn't fully recover until week 5 or 6, he lost his job by default. Good read though, you make valid points on the other QBs

I wanted to comment on Troy Smith but @The NFL Chick beat me to it. The story is correct the way she tells it. Smith would have been the starter last season, but for his illness.

As for Jason Campbell, he is the victim of an impatient owner. He needs more time with Jim Zorn's system to see if he will be effective. NOW is not the time to worry about replacing him.

Great post. Basically most of these guys are not being helped by the lack of talent around them (VY being the exception).

Wildcat isn't a system, it's a formation. If a team tried to use it as a full time system, it would lose its effectiveness very quickly. And the formation's success seems to somewhat require a RB taking the snaps–Vick could probably have some success using this formation (assuming he comes out of prison in shape), but what would he do the rest of the time?

April 20, 2009 at 4:30 pm

I know its a formation. I coached and played football so I definetly know the difference, I was just making a point.

the black quarterback doesn't recieve the same nurturing that white quarterbacks get,the jason campbell, jamarcus russell, vince young situations bear that out. two of those three were high draft choices, matthew stafford is this years beauty queen at the qb position, he will get the key to the city and everthing else that comes with being the top dog. he will have every opportunity to proove himself as worthy of the pick. next year is going to be interesting ,tim tebow is coming out, he is a winner has tremendous leadership qualities but by nfl standards he is not a polished passer. will he be switched to another position? like black quarterbacks with similar skills or allowed to hone his craft from the quarterback position.

April 20, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Why would anyone even care to be honest. Black or white just give me a winner and im happy. Mcnabb or Kolb who really cares as long as they can bring a superbowl to the city!

April 20, 2009 at 9:46 pm

I think the reason why Tebow stayed one more year is to get himself together as a passer. I think someone will keep him at QB. He could be pretty good, but we shall see. I'm 50/50 on him.

April 20, 2009 at 9:53 pm

I know the Eagles don't care, they have had black quarterbacks, their problem is that they need a WR to match with Jackson.

April 20, 2009 at 9:54 pm

you know what??? this is soo stupid..a handfull of black qbs versus all those white qbs.. all those white qbs that failed, tripples that of the black qbs.. but we are not talkin about that..truly it dosent matter what color they are, if they suck, they suck!! the only prob i have is with my team, the eagles.. he is doomed to fail. if any white qb was put in his position, they would have been gone long ago!! and you know it!! he makes great strides with garbage players!! i cant sit here and name all the garbage recivers he had.. he fineally gets one and its T O, can you feel my frustration??

April 21, 2009 at 7:36 am

McNabb has done very well without a great WR and the one year he did have one, T.O. They make it to the Super Bowl. The more white QB's you have, the better chance you have of them failing. The Eagles need a #1 WR and another RB and they will be fine no matter who is playing QB. I'm frustrated with my QB as well, I'm a Cowboys fan, go figure!!!

April 21, 2009 at 7:53 am

I think the only quarterback on your list that really is seriously being given up on is Jason Campbell, and it would be extremely foolish of the skins to do so. He is a fine quarterback I think, he doesn't wow you with stats but he keeps that team in games they have no business winning. Mr. Snyder is a dumb owner who isn't going to ever really get it and unfortunately his team will never dip into true hell because the salary cap is going away in the next CBA for sure so all of the traded draft picks and outrageous contracts will never come back to bite him.

I don't really agree with the rest of your quarterback arguments, as a Jag fan I think Garrard is awesome and completely safe. I don't think there is any legitimate interest in Sanchez from the organization regardless of rumors. Young & Jackson just seem to be poor quarterbacks to me, nothing to do with them being black they just can't quite play at this level, although Young might figure it out eventually. McNabb is going to be 33 and I think there is concern about age and injuries affecting his game especially when Philly has been pretty notorious for getting rid of older guys in general over the years (this year they released Dawkins and it was seen as cost-cutting an aging player) Even with all of that I don't think McNabb is going anywhere in the next few seasons, especially with what Kevin Kolb showed during his stints at QB. Russell will get time this season, he actually could be in a great situation now with Garcia hopefully teaching him some basics.

I really did enjoy your article, good discussion topic.

April 23, 2009 at 4:41 am

Thanks and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I guess I feel like these guys haven't gotten a fair shake. I hear more about Mark Sanchez in Minnesota, Jacksonville and Washington than anywhere else. When one place that should be named the most is San Francisco. Alex Smith has had his chance and it lasted alot longer than these guys. Same with David Carr, although his offensive line wasn't the greatest, they gave him years to prove himself. I believe Young could play at this level given he gets more time. Jackson may not be able to play at this level, but give him a chance to play himself out of the position like Alex Smith and David Carr. Those two guys had YEARS and YEARS to play themselves out of the starting job. The others haven't been there long enough, outside of McNabb. Jacksonville and Washington should not even have QB on their minds unles its in 4th or 5th round as a backup. Your Jaguars haven't had a decent WR there since Jimmy Smith. And they were even better when Keenan McCardell was paired up with Smith. Guess who the QB was? Mark Brunell. Why didn't they give Leftwich and Garrard a WR like those to, heck even one WR like that to throw to??? Things that make me say HMMMMMMM!!!!
