“Winning, A Viscious Cycle”

“Steroids and Athletes”….Within the last decade, have almost become synonymous to each other. The urge and pressure to be the best, the man, the top female athlete, the professional, the WINNER. This is every athletes dream and passion. Why else would you agree to play a sport, train for many hours a day, and engage in competition with others. That is what it is to be a competitor. You compete to WIN. That is the sole purpose of being there. It goes back to the Greek and Roman times. There has always been a competition of some sort with the goal of being the best, the WINNER. It even goes further then sports. Spelling bees, dance competitions, science projects, BBQ cook offs, 2 guys trying to win the heart of a woman or vice versa, etc. We are of a competitive nature and we strive to be the best and WIN!

With athletes there is no doubt that winning is the goal and what is important. But what happens when the competition is so fierce and well saturated?  What happened when you and 6 people have the same speed, strength, agility, focus, mental quickness, and drive? I will tell you. You as an athlete begin looking for that edge and what will take you above your competitor and you to victory. It starts with reading more about your sport. Then you begin eating healthier.  Next you begin hitting the weight room harder and longer. Lastly, you begin training harder.. Pushing your body to its limits. You stand confused and wonder what it is your doing wrong and why it is that you cant move ahead.

Sadly, this is where a lot of athletes turn to something called Performance Enhancers or most popularly titled, “Anabolic Steroids”. It has been proven time and time again that these pills, creams, and shots can improve an athletes speed and strength 3 fold. With this reputation, some athletes begin taking them without doing the proper research and knowing the different side effects that come with these enhancers. Blinded by the athletes hunger to be at the top, to WIN, he/she takes them and continues to train. After a while, the athlete notices more muscles, and he/she is becoming faster and stronger. Next thing you know the competition is in the dust. You have done it. You are now at the top and ahead of the game. Sometimes by leaps and bounds. You’ve done it. You are the Winner.

But what happens next? There is nothing temporary about Steroids at all. It is a temporary fix, like diet pills. Rather then to lose weight the healthy way through a good nutritional meal plan, they choose diet pills. The same is done with Steroids. Its a fast and easy way to get ahead of the game. The problem is this, now you have to continue to take these enhancers to stay at the top. Soon following your success, other athletes see that you are leaps and bounds ahead of them and that they need to find a way to beat you. Soon there is a rumor that you may be taking Steroids. So the bold and hungryathletes start thinking, ” If he/she can take Steroids, and excel the way they have, why cant I”. Next thing you know, the other competitors are taking steroids to keep up with you. Now it is a game of Cat and Mouse on both ends. One athlete is taking Steroids to stay ahead of the competition and the others are taking them to catch the person at the top. A truly viscous cycle that seems to be never ending.

Athletes, we all want to be on top and be declared the WINNER. That is why we compete. But lets be smart about this and look at the big picture. There are many health risks that come from these enhancers. Just to name a few. Bad Acne (chest, back, and shoulders), Aggression (Roid Rage), Deepened voice (in both men and woman), High Blood pressure, Depression, Liver Disease, Heart Failure and more. Those are the things that people are not told when considering taking Steroids.

Lastly, lets look at it this way. What is the primary goal of Steroids? What do they do? Well when you put this substance into your body, speeds up your results and causes a massive protein synthesis and bigger muscles. But there is still the downside that people ignore. People tend to ignore the fact that these enhancers could possibly cause serious harm or even death in some cases.

Short Story

An athlete once consulted a Health and Wellness doctor on the effects of steroids. He explained that he understood Steroids improved performance and increased muscle size throughout the body. The doctor says correct. The doctor then states that most athletes think that if you do not workout, while on Steroids, there are no affects. This is far from the truth. Even though someone is not working out, Steroids are still in the body and moving through the system. The doctor makes one last comment. “There is one muscle that never stops working and is the reason you are alive.” Your heart! Just as biceps, quads, and hamstrings have the potential to grow and get bigger, so does the heart.
